More sea, please! Our great cycling vacation on the North Sea between the German-Danish border and the Hanseatic city of Hamburg offers you the all-round package for an eventful and relaxing stay on the Wadden Sea coast. The play of the tides, grazing sheep on seemingly endless dykes, as well as small secluded harbor villages and old windmills, are just as much a part of our cycling vacation on the North Sea as delicious fish sandwiches and a chat with the friendly North Frisians. Let the healthy, salty sea air blow around your nose when you take a trip to the green island Föhr and the Hallig Hooge, get to know the islands of Sylt and Rømø, and cycle around the small southern Danish town of Tønder. In Husum, you will discover that the town is anything but gray, and it is easy to enjoy Dutch flair in Friedrichstadt. Our cycling vacation on the North Sea offers a contrasting program with a trip to St. Peter-Ording. The well-known seaside resort has a beautiful sandy beach that stretches for miles and leaves nothing to be desired for sun worshippers and sports enthusiasts alike. Cycle along the North Sea coast to Büsum, famous for its crab fishing. Inland, you will reach the Kiel Canal and the Elbe, which will take you past Glückstadt and into the heart of Hamburg, via Dithmarschen, which is characterized by marshland and geest areas.

Would you like to book the great cycling vacation on the North Sea in the 2025 season?

Map for a great cycling vacation on the North Sea

Day 1: Individual arrival in Niebüll / Risum

Your great cycling vacation on the North Sea begins in Niebüll. The town's name is derived from the Frisian for new settlement. In the Friesian Museum, you can learn more about the historical way of life of the North Frisians and the Natural History Museum provides insights into the nature and landscape on both sides of the German-Danish border.

Day 2: Excursion to the island of Föhr, approx. 50 km + ferry ride

The first day of your cycling vacation on the North Sea takes you to the island of Föhr. You start at the ferry port in Dagebüll. The ferry (not included) takes you to the green island, as Föhr is often called due to its lush vegetation. This is made possible by the sheltered location of Germany's fifth-largest island. On arrival on Amrum, you have the opportunity to cycle around the entire island in a relaxed manner or simply enjoy the sound of the North Sea on the south beach. The ferry takes you back to Dagebüll in the evening.

Day 3: Niebüll – Sylt – Havneby, approx. 60 km + train and boat trip

From Niebüll, take the train to Sylt, the Queen of the North Sea. After arriving in Westerland, hop on your bike and explore the island as you wish. With a cycle path network of over 200 kilometers, the island offers many opportunities for a short or long bike tour. Treat yourself to a fish sandwich in List before taking the ferry to the Danish island of Rømø. Rømø's beaches together form the largest sandy beach in Northern Europe. You will spend the night in Havneby, the island's main town.

Day 4: Havneby – Tønder, approx. 55 km

Today's stage of your cycling vacation on the North Sea takes you from Rømø via the Rømødæmningen to the Danish mainland. With the North Sea still in view, you reach Højer. The village is home to the largest wooden Dutch mill in Northern Europe. Via Møgeltønder, known for the most beautiful village street in Denmark and Schackenborg Castle, you reach Tønder. The town once gained national fame for its lace-making. In Drøhses Hus in the historic town center, you can learn more about the centuries-old handicraft technique.

Day 5: Tønder – Dagebüll / Schlüttsiel, approx. 50 / 60 km

Cross the nearby German-Danish border and cycle back to North Friesland. The Emil Nolde Museum in Seebüll is well worth a detour. It provides insights into the life and work of the expressionist painter. A visit to the Gotteskoogsee lake north of Niebüll is also worthwhile. The lake landscape is home to many rare animal and plant species. Enjoy the tranquillity and take a walk for a birdwatching tour. You will spend the night in Dagebüll or Schlüttsiel.

Day 6: Excursion to the Hallig Hooge, approx. 10 / 25 km + boat trip

Another excursion on your cycling vacation on the North Sea is on the agenda today. Take the ferry from Schlüttsiel to Hallig Hooge. Enjoy the fresh North Sea air on the way and the seemingly endless view across the sea. Hooge is the largest Hallig in the North Sea. It is wonderful to explore by bike or simply on foot. Visit the Storm Surge Cinema and the Königspesel, which introduces you to the North Frisian living and seafaring culture of the 17th and 18th centuries. Take the ferry back to Schlüttsiel.

Day 7: Schlüttsiel – Husum, approx. 45 km

Your cycling vacation on the North Sea coast takes you south along the North Sea cycle path. In the inland port of your destination for the day, Husum, you can experience the interplay of high and low tide up close and treat yourself to a delicious fish sandwich or a slice of Frisian cake. Husum-born writer Theodor Storm once described his hometown as a grey town by the sea. Thanks to its colorful harbor facades and diverse cultural offerings, the city is anything but dull and monotonous.

Old Town Husum

Day 8: Husum – Tönning / Lunden, approx. 35 / 40 km

From Husum, your cycling vacation by the North Sea first takes you to Friedrichstadt. In the old town, criss-crossed by canals and gabled houses, you will feel as if you have been transported to the Netherlands. The Dutch town owes its townscape to the Dutch immigrants who settled here in the 17th century. Take a walk or a canal trip before cycling to Tönning. In the town on the Eider, the Multimar Wattforum takes you into the world of the Wadden Sea. You will spend the night in Tönning or Lunden.

Day 9: Excursion to St. Peter-Ording, approx. 55 / 65 km + train ride

Your cycling day begins with a train ride to St. Peter-Ording. The seaside resort is known for its 12-kilometre-long and seemingly endless sandy beach, where you can relax and watch windsurfers ride the waves. Or how about whizzing across the beach in a sailing car yourself? You can indulge in culinary delights in one of the striking pile dwellings with sea views before cycling inland along the coast. You will spend the night again in Tönning or Lunden.

Day 10: Tönning – St. Michaelisdonn, approx. 60 / 70 km

Cross the Eidersperrwerk and cycle along the North Sea coast to the North Sea spa town of Büsum on your cycling vacation on the North Sea. The harbor town is known nationwide for its crabs. The route continues inland to Meldorf. You can already see the imposing Meldorf Cathedral from afar, which also impresses from close up with its early Gothic architecture. The landmark of your stage destination St. Michaelisdonn is the Edda Dutch windmill. Swap your bike for a short hike, as Edda is best reached on foot.

Day 11: St. Michaelisdonn – Glückstadt, approx. 50 km

You cycle on flat cycle paths through the Dithmarschen to Brunsbüttel at the mouth of the Kiel Canal. The canal was built at the end of the 19th century and is one of the busiest waterways in the world. In the Brunsbüttel Lock Museum you can learn more about the importance and functioning of the canal. You reach Glückstadt along the north-eastern bank of the Elbe. The town, which was built in the 17th century according to the plans of King Christian IV, is famous for its Glückstädter Matjes, a culinary specialty.

Day 12: Glückstadt – Hamburg, approx. 70 km

You cycle along the Elbe towards Hamburg on the last stage of your cycling vacation on the North Sea. Just outside the city gates, it is worth making a stop at the ship welcoming facility in Wedel.
