Our cycling vacation on the North Sea between the German-Danish border and the Hanseatic city of Hamburg offers you the all-round package for an eventful and at the same time relaxing stay at the Wadden Sea coast. The play of the tides, grazing sheep on seemingly endless dikes as well as small secluded harbor villages and old windmills are just as much a part of our cycling vacation at the North Sea as delicious fish rolls and a chat with the hearty North Frisians. Let the healthy, salty sea air blow around your nose when you take a trip to the green island of Föhr and the Hallig Hooge, get to know the islands of Sylt and Rømø and ride around the southern Danish town of Tønder. In Husum, you will discover that the town is anything but gray and that it is easy to enjoy Dutch flair in Friedrichstadt. A contrasting program is offered to you on our cycling vacation at the North Sea during a trip to St. Peter-Ording. The well-known seaside resort has a kilometer-long and beautiful sandy beach, which leaves nothing to be desired for both sun worshippers and sports enthusiasts. Along the North Sea coast you cycle to Büsum, which is known for its crab fishing. Inland, you will reach the Kiel Canal via Dithmarschen, which is characterized by marshland and geest areas, as well as the Elbe, which will take you past Glückstadt into the heart of Hamburg.

Map to the great cycling vacation at the North Sea

Day 1: Individual arrival in Niebüll

Your cycling vacation on the North Sea begins in Niebüll. The name of the town derives from the Frisian term for new settlement. In the Friesisches Museum you can learn more about the historical way of life of the North Frisians and the Natural History Museum provides insights into the nature and landscape on both sides of the German-Danish border.

Day 2: Excursion to the Island of Föhr, approx. 50 km + ferry

The first cycling day of your North Sea cycling vacation takes you to the Island of Föhr. It starts at the ferry port in Dagebüll. By ferry (not included) it goes to the green island, as Föhr is called due to its lush vegetation with pleasure. This is made possible by the protected location of the fifth largest German island. Upon arrival on Amrum, you have the opportunity to relax and cycle around the entire island or simply enjoy the sound of the North Sea on the southern beach. The ferry will take you back to Dagebüll in the evening.

Day 3: Schlüttsiel – Sylt – Havneby, approx. 60 km + train ride + ferry

From Niebüll you go by train to the Queen of the North Sea to Sylt. After your arrival in Westerland, get on your bike and explore the island according to your wishes. With a network of bike paths of over 200 kilometers, the island offers many opportunities for exploration for a short, but also long bike tour. Treat yourself to a fish sandwich in List before taking the ferry to the Danish island of Rømø. Rømø's beaches together form the largest sandy beach in Northern Europe. You'll spend the night in Havneby, the island's main town.

Port Sylt

Day 4: Havneby – Tønder, approx. 55 km

Today's stage of your cycling vacation at the North Sea takes you from Rømø, via Rømødæmningen, to the Danish mainland. With the North Sea still in view, you will reach Højer. The village is home to the largest wooden Dutch mill in Northern Europe. Via Møgeltønder, known for the most beautiful village street in Denmark and Schackenborg Castle, you will reach Tønder. The town once gained national fame for its lace-making. In Drøhses Hus in the historic town center, you can learn more about the centuries-old handicraft technique.

Day 5: Tønder – Dagebüll / Schlüttsiel, approx. 50 – 60 km

Crossing the nearby German-Danish border, you cycle back to North Frisia. A detour is worthwhile to the Emil Nolde Museum in Seebüll. It provides insights into the life and work of the expressionist painter. A visit to Lake Gotteskoogsee north of Niebüll is also worthwhile. The lake landscape is home to many rare animal and plant species. Enjoy the tranquility and take a walk for a bird-watching tour. You will spend the night in Dagebüll or in Schlüttsiel.

Day 6: Excursion to the island of Hooge, approx. 10 km + boat trip

Another excursion on your cycling vacation at the North Sea is on the agenda today. With the ferry you will cross from Schlüttsiel to the Hallig Hooge. Enjoy the fresh North Sea air and the seemingly endless view over the sea on the way. Hooge is the largest Hallig in the North Sea. It can be wonderfully explored by bike or simply on foot. Visit the storm tide cinema and the Königspesel, which gives you an understanding of the North Frisian living and seafaring culture of the 17th and 18th centuries. Take the ferry back to Schlüttsiel.

Day 7: Schlüttsiel – Husum, approx. 45 km

On the North Sea Coast Cycle Route, your North Sea cycling vacation will take you south. In the inland harbour of your destination of the day, Husum, you can experience the interplay of high and low tide up close and treat yourself to a delicious fish roll or a slice of Friesentorte (a cream cake). The writer Theodor Storm, who was born in Husum, once called his hometown the gray city by the sea. Thanks to its colorful harbor facades and a diverse cultural offering, the city presents itself as anything but dreary and monotonous.

Husum old town

Day 8: Husum – Tönning / Lunden, approx. 35 / 40 km

From Husum, your cycling vacation at the North Sea will take you first to Friedrichstadt. In the old town, crisscrossed by canals and gabled houses, you will feel as if you have been transported to the Netherlands. The townscape owes the Holland town to the Dutch immigrants settled in the 17th century. Take a walk or a canal cruise before cycling to Tönning. In the town on the Eider River, the Multimar Wattforum takes you into the world of the Wadden Sea. You will spend the night in Tönning or Lunden.

Day 9: Excursion to St. Peter-Ording, approx. 55 / 65 km + train ride

Your cycling day begins with a train ride to St. Peter-Ording. The seaside resort is famous for its 12-kilometer-long and seemingly endless sandy beach, where you can relax wonderfully and watch windsurfers riding the waves. Or how about darting across the beach in a sailing cart? You can indulge in culinary delights in one of the striking pile dwellings, including a sea view, before cycling inland along the coast. You will spend the night again in Tönning or in Lunden.

St. Peter-Ording

Day 10: Tönning – St. Michaelisdonn, approx. 60 / 70 km

Via the Eidersperrwerk and along the North Sea coast you will cycle to the North Sea spa Büsum on your cycling vacation at the North Sea. The harbor town is known nationwide for its crabs. The route continues inland to Meldorf. Even from a distance you can see the imposing Meldorf Cathedral, which also impresses with its early Gothic architecture. The landmark of your stage destination St. Michaelisdonn is the Dutch windmill Edda. Swap your bike for a short hike, because Edda is best reached on foot.

Day 11: St. Michaelisdonn – Glückstadt, approx. 55 km

On flat cycle paths, the route leads through the region of Dithmarschen to Brunsbüttel at the mouth of the Kiel Canal. The canal was built at the end of the 19th century and is one of the busiest waterways in the world. In the Brunsbüttel Schleusenmuseum you will learn more about the importance and functioning of the canal and its locks. Along the northeastern bank of the Elbe, you will reach Glückstadt. Built in the 17th century according to plans by King Christian IV, the town is famous for Glückstädter Matjes, a culinary fish specialty.

Day 12: Glückstadt – Hamburg, approx. 55 km

On the last stage of your journey you cycle along the river Elbe in the direction of Hamburg. At the gates of the city, it is worth stopping at the ship welcoming facility in Wedel. It welcomes and bids farewell to large ships arriving or departing the port of Hamburg. Hamburg welcomes you with a wealth of sights and a wide range of cultural activities. Enjoy the maritime flair of the Hanseatic city before your cycling vacation on the North Sea ends tomorrow.
