Cycling tours in Alsace

As the easternmost region of France, Alsace sparkles with lots of small wine villages, pretty timber-framed houses, medieval castles, seemingly endless vineyards, and gastronomic pleasures! Sometimes belonging to Germany, sometimes to France, the historical changes of the past centuries can still be felt today. German thoroughness and the French way of life meet here and make Alsace a very special region. Situated between the Vosges mountains and the Rhine Valley, it is a wonderful place to cycle between Strasbourg and Mulhouse. On our cycling holidays in Alsace, you will get to know the Alsace Wine Route, admire the Capital of Europe Strasbourg, see the Isenheim Altarpiece in Colmar, and be enchanted by the picturesque townscape of Riquewihr. Take in the panoramic view from the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle at an altitude of almost 800 meters over the Vosges mountains and the Rhine Valley, admire the monumental Rohan Castle in Saverne, or get to know Alsace on a bike & boat tour. And perhaps you will come across one of the storks that have now returned to the region. It is considered the unofficial heraldic animal of Alsace.

If you're on a cycling holiday in Alsace, there's no getting around Sauerkraut. Sauerkraut? The choucroute alsacienne is cabbage stewed in white wine and served with either sausage or some other salty kind of meat. A Foie gras d'Alsace, Flammekueche or a strong Munster cheese are also served. Enjoy a white wine typical of Alsace - Pinot Gris, Muscat d'Alscace, or Gewürztraminer. Or a little sparklier? Then try a glass of Crémant d‘Alsace. As you can see, Alsatian cuisine is both exciting and varied. It is one of the best in France. Reason enough for many top chefs to settle here and conjure up traditional Alsatian dishes for you.

If you want to get to know France's easternmost region by bike, you can look forward to a cycle tour in Alsace. Starting in Strasbourg is the perfect way to get to know the region around the Alsace Wine Route. The imposing cathedral made of red Vosges sand, the old town district La Petite France and the headquarters of the European institutions underline the international flair of this beautiful city. Your journey takes you past picturesque ruins and lush green vineyards to Colmar and Riquewihr - one of the most beautiful towns in France. A detour to Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle, one of the most imposing fortresses in Europe, rewards you with a magnificent view over the surrounding countryside. There are plenty of places to take a break in any of the many wine cellars along the way.

The small wine town of Colmar is considered the capital of the Alsace wine-growing region. On a star bike tour in and around Colmar, you have enough time to visit the medieval old town and the Musée Unterlinden. Through green vineyards, you reach Hunawihr, known for its many storks, and the castle ruins of Kaysersberg. Cycle on a somewhat flatter route across the Rhine to Breisach in Germany. Cross the fortified town of Neuf-Brisach, designed by Vauban. Strasbourg, just 75 kilometers away, should not be missed on this cycle tour in Alsace. Take the bike for a few kilometers and then the train. Whichever way you like!

A tour of a special kind - unfortunately not currently bookable - connects the Alsatian city of Strasbourg with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Leaving Strasbourg Cathedral behind you, you cycle to Saverne, the Alsatian Versailles. The mightiness of the Château des Rohan is in no way inferior to the original. On this cross-border cycling holiday, you will visit Saarbrücken and see for yourself why the area around the Moselle-Franconian town of Merzig is called Äppelkischd. After you have passed the Saar Loop, Trier - the oldest city in Germany - is one of your next destinations.

Get to know Alsace by water too. While the MS Olympia accompanies you on a river cruise from Strasbourg to Mainz, you will cycle to the most beautiful places that the Upper Rhine has to offer. In addition to the capital of Europe - Strasbourg, you will visit the old imperial city of Speyer and the Rhineland-Palatinate state capital of Mainz.
