The Moselle makes its way from the Vosges Mountains in north-eastern France to where it flows into the Rhine. And you are right in the middle of it – on a section between Nancy and Trier! On our journey along the Moselle cycle path, you start in the heart of Lorraine. You first follow the French Moselle along the Moselle Canal. Via Pont-à-Mousson, you will reach Metz on the Moselle cycle path in Lorraine, which will impress you with its beautiful Gothic cathedral, a wealth of sublime buildings and museums. The route continues via Thionville to the border triangle of Germany, France and Luxembourg. At Perl you reach the German Moselle. As far as Trier, you follow the Moselle Valley, which is lined with vineyards and was already inhabited in Roman times. It was also the Romans who cultivated wine here. To this day, the region along the Moselle produces excellent and nationally renowned wines – taste and enjoy! In Trier, you have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the Romans: Numerous buildings such as the Porta Nigra and the Imperial Baths will take you back to ancient times. On our trip on the Moselle cycle path in Lorraine, you will get to know a lesser-known section of the Moselle in France, discover both small and large historic towns and enjoy German and French culture at the same time.
Your journey along the Moselle cycle path in Lorraine begins in Nancy. The former capital of the Dukes of Lorraine impresses with a mix of buildings from different eras, from medieval buildings to impressive Art Nouveau buildings. The Place Stanislas stands out in particular. With its neoclassical ensemble of buildings, it is one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. A specialty of the city are the golden bergamot sweets and the rainbow-colored macarons – sweet and delicious. Or how about a hearty quiche lorraine to get you in the mood for the upcoming cycling days?
On the Moselle cycle path in Lorraine today, you first cycle along the Meurthe river. At Custines, you meet the Moselle, which you follow along its many meanders to Pont-à-Mousson. The name of the town goes back to one of the few bridges over the Moselle at the time. In the Middle Ages, the Moselle was controlled by a castle located just outside the town. It is now in ruins. You can enjoy the view of the town and the Moselle Valley on a long walk up the hill.
For the most part, you will follow the Moselle Canal on today's stage of your journey on the Moselle cycle path in Lorraine. The appearance of your destination for the day, Metz, is characterized by a multitude of historical buildings and squares as well as numerous churches. The impressive Saint-Étienne Cathedral stands out in particular. It is considered one of the most beautiful and largest church buildings in France and impresses with a window area of more than 6000 square meters. One of the city's culinary specialties is the mirabelle plum, which is used in cakes and jams as well as in spirits.
You cycle along the Moselle towards Thionville without any climbs. A detour to Uckange is worthwhile on the way. In the Parc du Haute-Fourneau, a disused iron and steelworks, you can gain an insight into the former iron and steel production in Lorraine, which once shaped the region. In Thionville, an extended walk is worthwhile. It takes you past St. Maximin Church, the Tour aux Puces Museum and the Belfry, a 14th century watchtower.
Today, the Moselle cycle path in Lorraine takes you to the border triangle of Germany, France and Luxembourg. Following the meanders of the French Moselle, you reach your destination for today, Perl, shortly after the French-German border. The small wine village is known for its Roman Villa Borg. The open-air museum displays an excavated and reconstructed Roman villa as well as other buildings from Roman times. Perl is the only wine-growing community in Saarland. Try a tasty drop or two from the surrounding vineyards.
On the last stage of your journey on the Moselle cycle path in Lorraine, you cycle to Trier. Before that, you continue to follow the course of the Moselle, which is now German and forms the natural border with Luxembourg as far as the town of Wasserbillig. Accompanied by vineyards on both sides of the river, you reach Trier. The city is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the Roman era, who settled here over 2000 years ago. Be it the Porta Nigra, the amphitheatre, the Roman bridge or the Barbara Baths – there is plenty to see in Germany's oldest city.
