The Moselle rises in the Vosges Mountains and makes its way through northeastern France to its mouth on the Rhine in Coblenz. Our bike tour starts in the heart of Lorraine, in Nancy. From there you will follow the Moselle, as the Moselle is called in French, to Pont-à-Mousson and Metz. Impressed by the Saint-Étienne Cathedral and the city‘s diverse art scene, the tour continues to the border triangle of Germany, France and Luxembourg. From Perl, you will cycle through the German Moselle Valley, which is lined with vineyards. You will follow the typical Moselle loops and experience a region that was settled by the Romans more than 2000 years ago and has left a lasting impression. Especially in Treves, this is noticeable in many corners of the city. However, the Romans not only left behind interesting buildings, but also ensured that the Moselle developed into a traditional wine-growing region. On our bike tour from Lorraine you will get to know small wine-growing villages, picturesque half-timbered towns and majestic castles. On top of that, you will enjoy excellent wines, which you can taste to your heart‘s content along the way. Speaking of enjoyment: Culinary our bike tour from Lorraine is rounded off by the exquisite French and the hearty Rhineland-Palatinate cuisine.
Your bike tour in Lorraine begins in Nancy, the former capital of the Dukes of Lorraine. Nestled in the surrounding wooded hills, Nancy has an old town worth seeing, which knows how to inspire with a mix of buildings from different eras. The classicist Place Stanislas is particularly worth seeing. With its gilded lattices and magnificent fountains, it is one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. Sample some of the city's specialties: bergamot sweets, macarons, and baba au rhum. Bon appétit!
You follow the course of the Meurthe River, which meets the Moselle at Custines. Along the turns of the Moselle you will reach Pont-à-Mousson. The town owes its name to one of the few bridges over the Moselle at the time and translates as Bridge at Mousson. Controlling the Moselle in the Middle Ages, the castle above the town is now in ruins. Take an extended walk up there and enjoy the view of the village and the Moselle valley.
Today's stage of your bike tour in Lorraine takes you along the Moselle Cycle Path to Metz. The silhouette of the city is dominated by the impressive Saint-Étienne Cathedral. Discover other treasures of the more than 3000-year-old city during a walk. Art lovers will find what they are looking for at the Centre Pompidou-Metz and coffee lovers will get their money's worth in the lively street cafés. A particular Metz specialty is the mirabelle plum. Whether in confectionery, in tarts or in schnapps - an annual mirabelle plum festival is even dedicated to the golden-yellow fruit.
Practically climb-free you cycle along the French Moselle to Thionville. Before you reach the city, a detour to Uckange is worthwhile. The Parc du Haute-Fourneau U4 there, a disused blast furnace park, provides insights into iron and steel production in Lorraine, which was once widespread in the region. In your day's destination of Thionville, take an extensive city walk that takes you past the Flea Tower Museum, the Belfry and St. Maximin Church.

Today your bike tour leads you from Lorraine into the border triangle of Germany, France and Luxembourg. Not far from your stage destination Perl you will cross the French-German border. The wine village of Perl is known for its reconstructed Roman Villa Borg. Let the archaeological open-air museum take you back to the time of the Romans and their everyday life. Enjoy delicate wines in the Saarland's only wine-growing community and get in the mood for the coming stages along the German Moselle River.
You follow the course of the Moselle, which also marks the border with Luxembourg up to the town of Wasserbillig. Along the river, which is lined with vineyards on both sides, you cycle via Konz to Treves. Take plenty of time to get to know Germany's oldest city during an exploratory tour. There is much to see: the Porta Nigra, the amphitheater, the Imperial Baths, the Roman Bridge, the Treves Cathedral, the Karl Marx House and and and...
Framed by lush vineyards, you follow the Moselle on your bike tour in Lorraine first to Neumagen-Dhron. The oldest wine-growing community in Germany was settled early on by the Romans. The Neumagen wine ship in the village center bears witness to this. The floating replica of the ship is anchored on the banks of the Moselle. Just a stone's throw away, you'll reach Piesport. Visit the reconstructed winepress, where wine was already processed in Roman times. At the end of the cycling day, enjoy a fine drop of wine from the famous Piesporter Goldtröpfchen vineyard.
With the Moselle Loreley - a rocky massif - in view, you leave Piesport and reach Bernkastel-Kues after a few kilometers. Situated at the foot of steep vineyards, the half-timbered town impresses with its cobblestone alleys and quaint wine taverns. Sample a sparkling Riesling from the Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard before continuing on to Traben-Trarbach. Thanks to many half-timbered buildings and charming Art Nouveau villas, the wine trading town can call one of the most beautiful riverside promenades on the Moselle its own.
The bike tour from Lorraine takes you first to Zell. Located on the narrowest loop of the Moselle, the town has more than four million vines. The Black Katz vineyard is world famous. Treat yourself to a sparkling Riesling and stroll through the winding alleys of the historic town center. Swing your way to Cochem. Above the town towers the more than 1000 year old Cochem Imperial Castle - impressive! The Cochem chair lift will take you up high. It takes you to the vantage point Pinnerkreuz - magnificent views included!
Relaxed, you follow the course of the Moselle. In Treis-Karden, the Moseldom will catch your eye. It is considered the most important church between Treves and Coblenz. A true gem of medieval castle architecture awaits you a few kilometers further a bit off the Moselle - Eltz Castle. It is situated on a rock in the middle of the Elz valley and impresses with its incomparable architecture. In your destination Coblenz you can expect a varied offer of worth seeing buildings, cultural events and of course the German Corner - here the Moselle flows into the Rhine.
