Pedalling past cliffs that seem to penetrate endlessly into the sky, the cycle tour along the young Danube takes you to Sigmaringen. In Ulm you climb the steps of the highest church tower in the world before setting off to explore the Bavarian-Swabian countryside. The roads to Donauwörth are lined with lovingly maintained monasteries, castles, fortresses and wonderful countryside ‒ see where the river disappears into the ground and a spring whose water is even bluer than the sky. The ever-changing countryside, excellent cycle paths and the hospitality of the people here have made the Swabian part of the Danube one of the most popular cycle holidays among our guests.

Map for cycling in the valley of the young Danube

Day 1: Individual arrival in Donaueschingen

It is said that "Brigach and Breg bring the Danube to us". However, the Romans thought the spring in the park of the Fürstenberg castle was the source of the Danube. The castle in the Belle Epoque style is an impressive testimony to the former importance of the von Fürstenberg family. It houses an interesting natural history collection and important modern works of painting.

Day 2: Donaueschingen - Mühlheim / Fridingen, approx. 45 / 50 km

This stage takes you along the first few kilometers of the Danube Cycle Path. In Immendingen, you can observe a unique natural spectacle with the sinking of the Danube. Here, the river disappears into the limestone for a large part of the year. Instead of flowing into the Black Sea, part of the Danube flows into the North Sea via the Aachtopf and the Rhine. After Tuttlingen, the valley narrows and you soon reach your destination for today's stage, Fridingen.

Day 3: Fridingen - Scheer / Sigmaringen, approx. 40 - 55 km

Today you accompany the Danube through the impressive Danube valley formed over the course of time. Over 100 m high limestone cliffs, on which a castle or ruin can be seen every now and then, line your route. A piece of living history awaits you in Sigmaringen with the Hohenzollern Castle - it is still inhabited by its noble family.

Day 4: Scheer - Ehingen / Obermarchtal, approx. 40 - 70 km

Instead of the rugged rocks, a softer landscape awaits you today. Take a detour to the former Celtic town of Heuneburg. At its open-air museum you can immerse yourself in Celtic world. Continue your tour via Riedlingen and its timbered houses, to Ehingen. The baroque town attaches great importance to its beer culture. Four independent, traditional breweries have shaped its history.

Day 5: Obermarchtal - Ulm, approx. 35 - 60 km

You can either follow the Danube or take the detour via Blaubeuren. In Bleubeuren you are at the Blautopf spring which also marks the beginning of a large cave system. The intense blue color of the water almost seems artificial. The Blau river flows to the Swabian city Ulm which features the tallest church tower in the world. The climb up the 768 steps is strenuous but will be rewarded with a fantastic view reaching as far as the Alps.

Day 6: Ulm - Lauingen, approx. 50 km

Between Ulm and Lauingen, within a tight sequence villages stand in line always at a slight distance to the Danube river to be at on the safe side from its floods. Take a break at the Legoland in Günzburg. Here you can marvel at over 50 million little Lego blocks in every possible color and shape. Your destination for the day, Lauingen, is also known as the Town of Towers. The name refers to the 54-metre-high Schimmelturm tower on its market square.

Day 7: Lauingen - Donauwörth / Wörnitzstein, approx. 45 / 50 km

Your final stage takes you to Höchstädt with its late Renaissance castle. Then it continues to the Danube floodplains near Donauwörth, situated at the mouth of the Wörnitz. Here you are at the significant intersection of the former trade route between Nuremberg and Augsburg. Even today, the magnificent houses are a reminder of the town's historical importance. The Käthe Kruse Doll Museum is not just a recommendation for children.

Day 8: Individual departure

After breakfast, your bike tour ends in the valley of the young Danube. We are happy to extend your stay in Donauwörth.
