Our bike tour on Rügen and Usedom leads you to the two biggest islands of Germany. Both belong to the most popular travel destinations in the North of Germany and expect you with numerous sights and attractions. You start our bike tour on Rügen and Usedom in the hanseatic town Stralsund, that is characterized by brick houses. It goes further to Rügen and directly to the sea into the Baltic sea resort Göhren. Treat yourself with a trip to the peninsula Mönchgut or a swimming day at the beach – as you like. With the Rasender Roland, you go to Putbus. Back on the mainland, you get to know the hanseatic and university city Greifswald and Wolgast, that is famous for its blue miracle. Just a stone’s throw away, you have already reached Usedom. The island, that is famous for its imperial spas and piers, expects you with apparently endless sand beaches, fashionable villas and even more healthy, salty air. Across the island, you cycle to the nature paradise Szczecin Lagoon. At the end of your bike tour on Rügen and Usedom, you get to Heringsdorf / Mellenthin.
The starting point of your cycle tour on Rügen and Usedom is the old Hanseatic city of Stralsund. The gateway to the island of Rügen, as the Hanseatic city is often referred to, was founded by the Slavs and developed into a city by the Westphalians. Stroll through the old town, which boasts an impressive number of buildings from the Brick Gothic period. Make a detour to the impressive St. Nikolai Church and the Ozeaneum, which takes you into the world of the seas and their inhabitants.
Today you will get to know the island of Rügen. First take the train (included) from Stralsund to Bergen. Pay a visit to the Ernst Moritz Arndt Tower on the outskirts of the town. It is located on the 91-metre-high Rugard, an elevation on the outskirts of the town. Enjoy the view over large parts of Rügen before heading to the Baltic Sea coast. Once you arrive in Göhren, it's off to the beach. Feel the fine sand under your feet as you take an evening stroll to the pier and let the Baltic Sea wind blow around your nose.
The diverse landscape of the Mönchgut peninsula is your destination today. Enjoy a day of swimming at the beach between Thiessow and Lobbe. Or how about a short hike through the Zicker Mountains? Although these are only 66 meters high at most, they are a wonderful way to explore the peninsula on foot and gather new impressions. You can find out more about the peninsula at the Mönchguter Heimatmuseum in Göhren.
At the start of today's stage of your cycle tour on Rügen and Usedom, you can look forward to a very special highlight: the Rasenden Roland. The historic steam-powered train dates back to the 19th century and takes you to Putbus (train ride included). The youngest town on Rügen impresses as a planned town in the classicist style. Cycle to Glewitz, just a few kilometers away. There you take the ferry (not included) to Stahlbrode, get back on your bike and reach your destination for the day, the Hanseatic and university town of Greifswald.
Today you cycle along the Baltic Sea coastal cycle path to Wolgast, the gateway to the island of Usedom. On the way, it's worth taking a break for a swim at the kilometer-long sandy beach of Lubmin. Refreshed, you reach Wolgast. Visit the picturesque old town with its many monuments. From the tower of St. Peter's Church you have a wonderful view over the town. Experience a blue wonder on the Peene River. The striking blue bascule bridge connects the mainland with the island of Usedom. If you spend the night in Karlshagen on Usedom, take the ferry across to Peenemünde in Freest and reach the Baltic seaside resort after a few kilometers. This allows you to shorten the stage by a few kilometers.
From Wolgast or Karlshagen, you first cycle to the Baltic seaside resort of Zinnowitz. Along the wooded coast, you will have the opportunity to take a dip in the cool waters of the Baltic Sea. Heringsdorf is one of Usedom's imperial resorts. The sophisticated seaside resort boasts a 508-metre-long pier. It is the longest in Germany. A few kilometers inland lies the estate village of Mellenthin, which has a romantic moated castle. You spend the night in Heringsdorf or Mellenthin
.
An excursion takes you to Lieper Winkel, a tranquil peninsula in the west of Usedom – nestled between the Peenestrom and the Achterwasser. It can be reached via a narrow land connection and consists of several small villages nestled in forests, meadows, lakes and marshland. If you want to take it easy today, you naturally have the option of spending the day on the beach in one of the Baltic seaside resorts or exploring the east of Usedom.
