Travel report: Cycling in the Valley of the Young Danube

From our guests Markus, Uli and their little dog Lilly

Valley of the young Danube

We arrived by car and our own bikes to Donaueschingen to the Hotel Waldblick, where we then rode our bikes around the city to visit the source of the Danube. Afterwards we went by car to the Rhine Falls in Switzerland, because it was a short distance away.

On the 1st day we went from Donaueschingen to Fridingen 50km.
After breakfast at the Hotel Waldblick, we set off through a strikingly green landscape and a short visit to the Entenburg hunting lodge, in beautiful weather for many kilometers along the Danube. We reached our destination for the day at the Jägerhaus guesthouse. For us the highlight of the tour with incredible views, Danube noise, room with bed on the balcony and a very friendly boss.

On the 2nd day we went from Fridingen to Sigmaringen/Scheer 55km.
After the wonderful balcony night and good breakfast we started again with still good weather through the many rocky landscapes with many opportunities to stop and enjoy the great views. In Sigmaringen we used our vouchers to visit the castle with a guided tour, which you should definitely do, and the suspension rope bridge was also a cool part. Then a bit to Scheer to the Hotel Donaublick with modern rooms and the very good restaurant across the street where we ended the day.

On the 3rd day we went from Sigmaringen/Scheer to Ehingen 70km.
The longest stage begins after a big breakfast buffet unfortunately with drizzle, which accompanies us the next days, several stops and good rainwear were necessary here. At any time you can take the train, which we had to do from Riedlingen to Ehingen because of too heavy rain. Nevertheless, cycling the partial route was a great thing, in good weather anyone can ride. In Ehingen we checked into the Ochsen and reserved a table in the house for the evening. The small town is very nice for strolling, everything is in the immediate vicinity. The Swabian food in the evening at the Ochsen was super tasty.

Valley of the young Danube

On the 4th day we went from Ehingen to Ulm 60km.
After a good breakfast we started towards Blaubeuren. There is a cave system directly on the bike path, which was very interesting. Always beautiful along the Danube, the bike path runs mostly directly next to the river. Arriving in Ulm, we parked the bikes at the hotel at the town hall in the center, checked in and then went shopping right away. We visited the Ulm Cathedral with the vouchers and found everything in the center what you need.

On the 5th day we went from Ulm to Dillingen 50km.
After a hearty breakfast in the Biedermeier room we headed in drizzle towards Dillingen again right next to the Danube to Günzburg where we visited Legoland and that was really cool. Arrived in Dillingen at the Hotel Kannenkeller, a little tired by the weather, we had delicious pizza and salad.

On the 6th day we went from Dillingen to Donauwörth 40km.
The last stage we started in beautiful weather. In Dillingen we visited the castle and took a Kneipp bath. In this stage it is much nicer to take the unpaved, but always well passable bike path right next to the Danube. Once again great natural landscapes to finish. Arriving in Donauwörth, we checked into the Donau Hotel with cool rooms, then visited the Käthe Kruse Museum and enjoyed typical Swabian cuisine in town at the Goldener Hirsch.

Conclusion:

Again a very successful bike tour despite intermittent bad weather, many bike paths directly on the Danube. The luggage has always worked and our dog was no problem in the hotels. Price-performance ratio top! Always happy to return.
