You cycle through one of the most impressive natural landscapes in southern Germany with plenty of airstream. Not only one river is your constant companion on this cycle tour, there are even five! The active Five Rivers bike tour combines tradition, cycling fun and medieval towns. Highlights of this tour are the numerous castles and the Franconian metropolis of Nuremberg. The Franconian Alb and the Upper Palatinate are perfect for your sporty cycling vacation. The hilly terrain and the length of the daily stages attract anyone who wants to combine sport and breathtaking scenery. You follow the sparkling rivers Vils, Naab, Danube, Altmühl and Pegnitz at a brisk pace. This five-river tour becomes an experience on the bike! Enjoy a freshly tapped beer or a typical Franconian Schäufele.
Nuremberg welcomes you to a warm welcome on your active Five Rivers bike tour. The city is famous all over the world for its Christkindlesmarkt. But it is undoubtedly a year-round destination. The imposing Imperial Castle is the city's current landmark, where all the emperors of the Roman Empire resided until 1571. Nuremberg lies on the Pegnitz, which is one of the five rivers that will accompany you on your cycle tour. If you have booked rental bikes, they will be waiting for you at your hotel.
Leaving the Franconian metropolis behind you, you begin your first stage. The Five Rivers Tour takes you along the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal through green landscapes to Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate. After you have pedaled hard, it is worth taking a breather in the historic old town. You cycle through small villages and forests on partly unpaved cycle paths via Freystadt to Berching. Today's stage destination describes itself as a little gem of the Middle Ages. And rightly so, as the well-preserved old town wall and the pretty half-timbered houses are worth seeing as witnesses to times gone by.
Today's stage of the Five Rivers Tour for sporty cyclists is predominantly flat. You cycle through the Altmühltal valley, past Beilngries and on to Dietfurt, which is also known as Bavarian China. This is where the Bavarian Archaeology Park begins. As you cycle, an exciting journey through time awaits you as far as Kelheim. With the river as your constant companion, you cycle past lush green meadows and small forests. A detour to Weltenburg is worthwhile, where you can marvel at the impressive Danube Gorge. From now on you follow the Danube. Cycle along wooded steep slopes to Castra Regina, a former legionary camp from which today's Regensburg emerged. Visit St. Peter's Cathedral or enjoy a regional beer in one of the many beer gardens.
You leave the city along the Naab, a tributary of the Danube. Following the river, you cycle through small villages and pass a nature reserve. The artists' village of Kallmünz is well worth a break. You can also cycle to the castle ruins. If you decide to make the climb, you will be rewarded with a sweeping view of the Naab valley! During today's stage of your five-river tour, you will have a wonderful view of the imposing white Jura rock. You separate from the Naab and now meet the Vils. The cycle path takes you along an old railroad line. Once you arrive in Amberg, you should definitely take time to visit the Amberg town spectacles. The water gate that spans the Vils is known as the Town Bridge. The bridge was first crossed in 1454.
Today's stage holds sporting challenges. It's going to be hilly! The first highlight of the tour is the 1000-year-old mountain town of Sulzbach-Rosenberg. The cycle path takes you uphill and downhill through forests and meadows. A short detour to the old town of Hersbruck is worthwhile! The town became rich through hop growing. You can still see the past in the elevator dormers of the old half-timbered houses. One thing is still missing from your five-river tour: the Pegnitz, which shows you the way to Nuremberg. Visit the Wenzel Castle in Lauf an der Pegnitz. Situated on an island in the Pegnitz, the former imperial residence can be reached via a historic drawbridge. Once you arrive in Nuremberg, there are numerous sights to see. Visit one of the many churches and the historic perforated prisons in the vaulted cellars of Nuremberg City Hall.
