Cycling Vacation on Funen

The starting point of your cycling vacation on Funen is in the heart of the island. Odense, Denmark's third largest city, offers a wealth of sights and experiences. The best thing to do is to grab your bike right after the hotel check-in and explore the city. Especially recommended are the Hans Christian Andersen museums, which provide insights into the life of the fairytale writer who is probably the most famous Dane.

Leaving Odense behind you, your cycling vacation on Funen will take you to the sea today. Shortly before you reach your destination for the day, Fåborg, you will have to pedal a little harder. Near Svanninge you will encounter the foothills of the Funen Alps. The strikingly hilly landscape offers one or two magnificent views over the south of Funen. Fåborg's landmark, the Klokketårnet bell tower, also offers fantastic views. Take a stroll through the cosy town and discover the Ymerbrønd. The fountain depicts the creation story in Norse mythology.

You cycle energetically to your destination of the day, Svendborg. If you want to spend some more time on your bike, take a detour to Tåsinge. The island's main attraction is the castle Valdemars Slot, right by the sea. It offers insights into the state rooms and displays all kinds of curiosities. If you want to get to know Svendborg better, pay a visit to Naturama. Adults and children with an interest in technology and nature are introduced to the animal world of Denmark and Northern Europe on three levels. You can stay overnight in Svendborg or in the small shipping village of Troense on the island of Tåsinge.

From Svendborg you set sail for the Danish South Sea today. On a ferry trip (included) you will get to know the island world south of Funen, which is known for its shallow waters. You will reach the island of Ærø, one of Denmark's most beautiful islands. From Ærøskøbing you have the option of cycling the whole island or simply only a part of it. Cycle around the island, get to know the harbour town of Marstal, visit the Skjoldnæs lighthouse at Søby and discover the many small, colourful bathhouses along the way, which are among the island's landmarks. From Ærøskøbing you take the ferry back to Svendborg.

Following the course of Østersøruten, the Danish Baltic Sea Cycle Route, you cycle northwards on your cycling vacation on Funen today. On the way you will have endless views of the sea and the Great Belt Bridge as well as numerous beaches that provide refreshing moments. At your destination for the day, Nyborg, Denmark's oldest royal castle awaits you. Nyborg Slot served as the residence of the Danish kings for several centuries. Not far from the castle is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city – Mads Lerches Gård, a former merchant's manor.

Not far from the Great Belt, the cycle route first takes you to Kerteminde. Visit the marine research centre Fjord & Bælt. Learn about the marine ecosystem and get up very close to harbour porpoises and seals. Before your cycling hoiday on Funen ends in Odense, it is worth making a detour to Ladbyskibet, the only burial ship from the Viking Age in Denmark. To round off your trip, take a boat trip on Odense Å, that’s definitively a different kind of city tour.
