Those who like to focus on cycling on a bike holiday have made the right choice with this cycling tour through Baden-Württemberg. The university cities Constance, Tübingen and Heidelberg are the cultural highlights of this tour, which is generally characterized by the diverse landscape. Lake Constance, the Swabian Alb, wine-producing Württemberg and the Odenwald forest create the perfect backdrop for your holiday. This cycling tour along the Neckar is designed for sporty and ambitious cyclists.
You start your sporty Neckar cycle tour in Constance, the largest city on Lake Constance. 600 years ago, it was the scene of a church council and the only papal election north of the Alps. The Rhine flows out of Lake Constance here: kilometer 0 on its way to the North Sea. A few minutes' walk from the medieval old town is the Swiss town of Kreuzlingen with its lively harbor.
First of all, you cycle through beautiful countryside along Lake Constance to the old Habsburg town of Radolfzell. You then continue past the Hegau volcanoes to Engen with its charming old town. The Albaufstieg ascent awaits you here, which you can alternatively tackle by train (not included). With the Danube in sight, you reach your destination for today.
Today, your cycle tour begins in Donaueschingen, where you can visit the ornate Danube spring in the castle park. From here, you follow the young Neckar through the Baar landscape to Schwenningen, the official source of the Neckar. The route continues along idyllic paths through the Neckar valley. A cultural highlight is Rottweil - the oldest town in Baden-Württemberg - with its well-preserved medieval townscape. The end of your stage is Sulz or Glatt, a picturesque town with a charming moated castle.
Sulz is also a Roman foundation, and you can find out more about it in the Römerkeller Museum. Cycle to Rottenburg via Horb, with its Stifterkirche church and Schurkenturm tower. Due to numerous town fires, the town is not medieval but Baroque in style. After a few kilometers you finally reach your destination for the day, the vibrant university town of Tübingen with its enchanting old town.
Today you continue to follow the Neckar through a varied river landscape. Via Nürtingen, Wendlingen and the colorful town of Plochingen with its striking Hundertwasser Tower, you reach the medieval town of Esslingen - a real gem with its half-timbered romanticism and lively old town. You then cycle through Bad Cannstatt, a town steeped in tradition, before continuing along the Neckar to Ludwigsburg. One of the most beautiful baroque ensembles in Germany awaits you there with the magnificent Residential Palace.
Leaving Ludwigsburg with its magnificent baroque buildings, you follow the Neckar through a river landscape increasingly characterized by viticulture. The slopes become steeper and the river meanders through the valley in wide bends – ideal conditions for the famous Württemberg wines. On the way, it is worth stopping in Marbach, the birthplace of Friedrich Schiller. In Neckarsulm, you can experience the history of technology at the NSU Museum before reaching Bad Friedrichshall or the charming half-timbered town of Bad Wimpfen.
Today's stage leads first along the Odenwald, then through the middle. The route is largely flat and easy to cycle. Eberbach and Hirschhorn are charming towns, and the route also briefly crosses Hessian territory. Heidelberg Castle heralds the end of the Neckar Valley and your destination, enjoy the evening in the lively university town.
