Cycling holidays on the French Atlantic coast

Atlantic breeze, endless dunes and pure pleasure - cycling vacations on France's Atlantic coast

Where the country ends in the west, the great adventure begins: the French Atlantic coast stretches for more than 2,000 kilometers from wild Brittany to sunny Basque Country. By bike - along the legendary Vélodyssée (EuroVelo 1) - you can experience this diverse coastal landscape at its most beautiful pace. Pine forests and golden dunes alternate with tranquil fishing villages, lively seaside resorts and vast nature reserves where migratory birds rest in flocks. The sound of the Atlantic accompanies you from stage to stage.

The French Atlantic coast is much more than just beaches and the sea. Discover the Marais Poitevin - the so-called Green Venice of France - stroll through the historic old town of La Rochelle with its defiant towers and marvel at the Dune du Pilat near Arcachon, the highest shifting sand dune in Europe. Elegant Bordeaux, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and wine metropolis on the Gironde, is the crowning glory at the end of your tour.

And the cuisine? A real treat! Fresh huîtres (oysters) from Marennes-Oléron or from the Arcachon basin, tender moules marinières, the world-famous fleur de sel from the Île de Ré, crispy galettes bretonnes and irresistible canelés bordelais - the Atlantic coast indulges all the senses. A glass of Muscadet, a sip of cognac from the town of the same name or a fine Bordeaux wine? À votre santé!

The French Atlantic coast has something for every cyclist. Those who love the rugged, unspoiled Brittany will lose themselves in the pink granite cliffs of the Côte de Granit Rose and the dreamy harbor towns around the Gulf of Morbihan. In the Bordelais, one of the most famous wine regions in the world awaits you. Between Médoc and Saint-Émilion, wines are produced that attract connoisseurs from all over the world. Along the Gironde estuary, mighty châteaux breathe history, while in the fall the grape harvest bathes the landscape in deep red and gold. Frequently asked questions

How challenging is a cycling holiday on the French Atlantic coast?
The French Atlantic coast is one of the most cycle-friendly regions in Europe. Most routes run along well-developed cycle paths - including the Vélodyssée (EuroVelo 1) - through largely flat or slightly hilly terrain. Beach dunes, pine forests and coastal paths can be explored at a leisurely pace. Short stages of 40 to 50 kilometers are also suitable for cyclists without high performance requirements.

For more athletic tours, there are variants with up to 70 daily kilometers available. The topography profile mainly corresponds to difficulty levels 1 to 2 out of 5 - ideal for beginners, families and anyone looking for a vacation instead of a competition.

Are there any cycling holidays on the Atlantic coast that are also suitable for families?

Yes, our cycling holiday in southern Brittany from Vannes via the Gulf of Morbihan to Arzon and Auray is our most family-friendly Atlantic coast tour: with around 30 kilometers per day, flat paths and a trip duration of only 6 days, it is also ideal for children. The short stages leave enough time for breaks on the beach and to discover the small fishing ports along the way.

As with all our tours, we take care of the daily luggage transport from accommodation to accommodation - so everyone travels carefree and with a light bike. Children's bikes and trailers can be organized on request.

When is the best time to travel for your Atlantic coast cycling holidays?

All of our tours on the Atlantic coast can be booked from spring to fall. The circular cycle tour from Brest along the wild Atlantic coast of Brittany is particularly suitable in May and June, when the coastal landscape is in full bloom and the paths are still quiet. The cycle tour on the Vélodyssée from La Rochelle to Bordeaux and the tour from Nantes to La Rochelle reach their peak in early summer and early fall - this is when the temperatures are pleasant, the oyster beds are in operation and the grape harvest begins in the Bordelais. The following applies to all trips: we recommend booking early, as experience shows that the most popular dates - especially the new tours - fill up quickly.
