The wild and romantic Loire River winds its way along more than 1000 km through breath-taking countryside to the sea - sometimes gentle and graceful, at others, wild and untameable. On this Loire cycling holiday you will follow this unconventional river on its last few kilometres before it enters the Atlantic. Your impressive tour begins at the western end of the famous castle area and takes you through varied countryside. You will see picturesque villages and majestic granite cliffs. Significant towns along the route are the white town of Saumur with its magnificent castle and the black town of Angers. At the end of your Loire cycling holiday, look forward to impressive nature reserves, stylish seaside resorts and, of course, the Atlantic Ocean.

The Loire Cycle Path to the Atlantic

Day 1: Individual arrival in Tours

Tours, as the former capital of France, is an ideal place to start your Loire cycling holiday. Wander around the historic old town. Many buildings, patrician houses and monuments are witness to this town on the Loire's glittering past.

Day 2: Tours – Chinon, approx. 55 km

Your first section of the tour takes you to two might castles. The first , Villandry Castle, is reached by following the Cher River. See the terraced gardens, fountains and artfully landscaped vegetable gardens as you wander along the shady footpaths. Next, you pedal on to Langeais, where the next castle is waiting. From the defense tower, enjoy views of the surrounding countryside, before you reach Chinon, passing small villages on quiet roads on the way.

Day 3: Chinon – Saumur, approx. 40 km

Along the Vienne River you will cycle from Chinon to the small village of Candes-St. Martin. Walk through the narrow streets past picturesque houses to the plateau above the village. Here you have a magnificent view of the confluence of the Vienne and Loire rivers. A very special experience awaits you in Souzay-Champigny. You will cycle practically through the middle of former cave dwellings. The castle of your today's stage destination Saumur is not to be overlooked. It sits high above the town, which is also called the white town because of its houses with limestone tufa facades.

Day 4: Saumur – Angers, approx. 55 km

You leave Saumur and cycle amidst the vineyards of Anjou on the southern bank of the Loire. The route leads through idyllic villages with medieval churches past castle ruins and large villas. In Saint-Mathurin-sur-Loire you will visit the Loire Odyssey information center and learn more about the eponymous river of your Loire bike tour. Along the Maine you will reach Angers with its imposing castle. This has no less than 17 towers! In the evening you stroll through the lively streets of the vibrant cultural city.

Day 5: Angers – Saint-Florent-le-Vieil, approx. 55 km

Those who have not visited the castle the day before should do so in the morning. The 14th century tapestry Cycle of the Apocalypse on display here is the largest tapestry ever woven in Europe. You follow the Maine back to the Loire and then to Savennières. This is where you will find the best and most expensive white wines of France from the Chenin Blanc grape variety. Worthy of a visit is the village of Béhuard, located on an island. Via dykes you finally reach the small town of Ingrandes-sur-Loire. In St-Florent-le-Vieil, a magnificent viewpoint entices you to go up!

Day 6: Saint-Florent-le-Vieil – Nantes, approx. 55 km

Your cycling holiday still takes you along part of the pretty Loire valley. After St. Florent, however, the valley narrows and the river pushes its way through slate and granite rock. You have reached Brittany. The cycle path now moves from bank to bank and you have a few uphill sections to tackle. But you are always rewarded by stunning views. In Nantes, Brittany's historic capital, you reach the last castle on the Loire before the Atlantic.

Day 7: Nantes – Saint Nazaire, approx. 65 km

Following the river, which is gradually getting wider and wider, the surrounding scenery becomes ever more peaceful. Downstream, passing many small villages, on your Loire cycling holiday you now reach the seaside resort of Saint-Brevin-les-Pins. Today's destination, Saint Nazaire, is only a few kilometres away. A group transfer takes you over an impressive, but busy, bridge. Don't miss out on a visit to this remarkable town in the Loire delta. The Atlantic shipyard and the submarine bunker are very visit-worthy.

Day 8: Individual departure or extended stay

After breakfast, your Loire cycling holiday sadly comes to an end and it's time to set off home. If you would like to enjoy your stay on the Atlantic a little longer, we are happy to book you an extra night in Saint Nazaire.
