Cycle Tour from Lübeck to Stralsund – our 7-day trip invites you to get to know the Baltic coasts of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in a relaxed way by bike. We start in Lübeck, the Queen of the Hanseatic League. After a boat trip on the Trave, you are already by the sea. On the Baltic Sea Coast Cycle Route, you cycle stage by stage through the Hanseatic city of Wismar, the island of Poel, the seaside resort of Kühlungsborn, the monastery in Bad Doberan - the pearl of North German Brick Gothic, the ghostly forest of Nienhagen, the miles of sandy beach at Warnemünde, the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula and, last but not least, the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, the gateway to the island of Rügen. And in the middle of it all, you can enjoy the view of the sea, breaks on the beach, the Hanseatic charm and maritime flair of the small and large coastal towns as well as the down to-earth and hearty dishes of northern German cuisine while cycling from Lübeck to Stralsund.
The old magnificent Hanseatic town was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and simply radiates charm. Most people associate Lübeck with the Holsten Gate, marzipan and Thomas Mann. But there is much more to see: the crooked brick houses, alleyways and courtyards, the town hall. And the fish rolls on the banks of the Trave at sunset taste particularly good.
Today's tour begins with a leisurely cruise on the River Trave. You then take a ferry across to the Priwall peninsula. A brisk ride along the Baltic Sea coastal cycle path along sheltered coastal landscapes and with far-reaching views of the sea towards Wismar. Stop for a swim along the way before getting to know Wismar, another Hanseatic city on your journey. Situated in a bay, the town has an old town that is well worth seeing. One of Wismar's landmarks, the Wasserkunst, is located on the spacious market square. The free-standing, pavilion-like structure was once used to supply the city with drinking water.
Today you are visiting the island of Poel. Take the ferry to the small island, enjoy the tranquility and the pleasure of swimming at one of the numerous island beaches. Alternatively, cycle close to the coast to the Baltic resort of Kühlungsborn. It is only a few more kilometers to Warnemünde. If you stay overnight in Bad Doberan, cycle inland from Kühlungsborn. Visit the Doberaner monastery and as well as the Kamp, a small English park in the heart of the city.
Back on the Baltic coast, you should take your first break in Nienhagen. With its gnarled trees and shrubs, the eerily beautiful Nienhagen Ghost Forest gives the impression of being in an enchanted fairytale forest. In Rostock-Warnemünde you will find one of the widest sandy beaches on the German Baltic coast. A short ferry ride takes you to the seaside resort of Hohe Düne. The route continues not far from the sea to the Baltic Sea spa resort of Graal-Müritz, famous for its spa architecture, or to Dierhagen, which lies off the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. You will spend the night in Dierhagen or Graal-Müritz.
You have enough time to explore the Darsser Forest and the wild romance of the west beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. From Prerow it can only be reached by foot, bike or horse and carriage ‒ make time to go there, it’s worth it. Via Zingst your tour takes you back to the mainland to the former Swedish town of Barth with its many buildings dating back to the 13 ‒ 18th century.
Leaving Fischland-Darß-Zingst and Barth behind you, you cycle towards your destination of Stralsund. The history of the city on the Strelasund, which separates the mainland from the island of Rügen, began as early as the 13th century. The fact that the town once enjoyed glorious times as a member of the Hanseatic League can still be seen today, especially in the historic town center: Town houses with typical gables, the neat town hall and mighty brick churches. A visit to the Ozeaneum is also a highlight. It takes you into the world of the Baltic Sea, North Sea and North Atlantic.
