The route through the Black Forest is surprisingly relaxing. The cycle path takes you past typical Black Forest farmhouses with their low-hanging hipped roofs between densely wooded dark green hills. On your round trip from Freiburg you will overcome most of the elevation by train, so you will often have the pleasure of simply rolling downhill. This means you can not only observe the laid-back attitude of the Baden locals, but also experience it yourself. Cycling via Waldshut-Tiengen you will reach the High Rhine and visit Basel, the lively city of 3 countries. Past healing mineral springs, which were already used by the Romans, you will cycle through the southern foothills of the Black Forest, before reaching the first vineyards close to Freiburg.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Freiburg

The city, which is characterized by French and Austrian influences, is considered the warmest in Germany. The streams in the old town provide a pleasant microclimate in summer. The Romanesque-Gothic cathedral is the focal point of the city. Freiburg's local mountain, the Schauinsland, offers a wonderful panorama over the hills of the Black Forest. Booked rental bikes are available at the hotel.

Day 2: Freiburg – Bonndorf, approx. 45 km + train ride

Your tour takes you right into the heart of the Black Forest. First, you cycle around 10 km to Kirchzarten there the train takes you to Titisee. On the train ride through the Höllental valley, you will cover most of the day's elevation gain in a relaxed manner. Cycle past the typical farms with low-hanging hipped roofs, the Black Forest houses, on the Southern Black Forest Bike Path to Bonndorf.

Day 3: Bonndorf – Waldshut-Tiengen, approx. 45 / 50 km

We recommend an additional day in Bonndorf to explore the nearby Wutach Gorge, one of the last wild river landscapes. Alternatively, you can cycle directly onwards to the Rhine valley, which is located 500 m below. Thus you cycle leisurely downhill through the hills of the Black Forest. Your stage destination of Waldshut-Tiengen is right on the Swiss border.

Day 4: Waldshut-Tiengen – Basel, approx. 55 km + train ride or approx. 65 km

You cycle via Laufenburg to Bad Säckingen, home to the longest covered wooden bridge in Europe. Two special museums await your visit: the garbage museum and the trumpet museum which tells the romantic story of the trumpeter of Bad Säckingen. Continue to cycle along the north bank of the Rhine to Rheinfelden. From here, you can easily shorten the stage by train (not included) to spend some time in Basel. If you continue on your way to Basel by bike, you will pass the Roman Museum Augusta, which provides information about the Roman colony Augusta Raurica. Around 200 AD, almost 10,000 people lived here its ruins can still be seen today. If you end the evening in the three-country town of Basel, you will have completed the longest stage on the Southern Black Forest Cycle Route!

Day 5: Basel – Badenweiler / Müllheim, approx. 50 / 45 km

You leave lively Basel at the border triangle and cycle to the Isteiner Klotz. Once surrounded by the floods of the Rhine, it has been lying quietly away from the river since the Tullaschen Rhine correction. You soon reach the first bathing resorts. Here on the edge of the Black Forest, healing waters emerge from the mountains and have been used for thermal baths since Roman times.

Day 6: Badenweiler – Freiburg, approx. 45 / 40 km

The Margraviate region has a very lovely feel. The many hours of sunshine and the remarkably pure water allows exceptional wines to grow. Local serenity prevails in the villages and towns on the edge of the Black Forest. Today you reach Freiburg, the southernmost city in Germany. The tower of Freiburg Minster was described by Jacob Burkhardt in 1869 as the most beautiful tower in the world.
