Travel report: The Rhine Cycle Path in Germany

From our guests Christopher and Thomas, who were traveling between Mainz and Cologne in June 2025...

Cycling from Mainz to Cologne 2025

This was my second visit to Germany this year, and my first time in Hesse and North Rhine Westphalia. Both regions are renowned for their hospitality and picturesque landscapes. My companion, Tom, and I eagerly anticipate an enriching cycling journey.

Day 1: Arrival in Mainz

Our journey commenced in Mainz, the city is renowned for the Gutenberg Museum and St. Stephen’s Church. Both attractions are conveniently situated near the Rhein River. Mainz boasts an abundance of restaurants, charming streets, and inviting attractions, making it an intriguing and captivating destination. With a history spanning approximately 2,000 years, it offers ample opportunities for exploration.

Day 2: Mainz to Rüdesheim

After a nourishing breakfast, we embarked on our cycling adventure. Our subsequent overnight stop was Rüdesheim am Rhein. Crossing the Rhein River onto the north bank, our route traversed breathtaking and distinctive scenery. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this region embodies both historical and natural splendour. The route is characterised by its smoothness and clear signage. Take time to visit the once important Hindenburgbrücke, although in ruins it still impresses.

Day 3: Rüdesheim to Oberwesel

The next day, boarding a ferry, we experienced a more comfortable and straightforward cycling journey to our next destination, Oberwesel. The route leads through some awe-inspiring and impressive landscapes. Renowned for its wines, we had the opportunity to sample both wine and ice cream, which we found to be of exceptional quality.

Day 4: Oberwesel to Koblenz

Departing from Oberwesel, we traversed the ancient city walls and embarked on a leisurely cycle journey. Our destination was Koblenz, a bustling city. While Koblenz’s vastness precludes a comprehensive exploration within a single afternoon, we ventured to the confluence of the Moselle and Rhein River, where a lively atmosphere prevailed. Ice cream, beer, music, and a throng of families and friends created an ambiance of merriment and enjoyment. For those with time, the Ludwig Museum Koblenz and the Schlossvorplatz offer worthwhile attractions.

Day 5: Koblenz to Bad Godesberg

On the fifth day, we commenced our longest cycling excursion to Bad Godesberg. Despite its length, the scenic beauty and towns along the route transformed the journey into a delightful experience. The Marina, rolling hills, and the ever-present and bustling Rhein River were all part of the captivating landscape. If time permits, a visit to the Remagen Bridge Museum is highly recommended. Throughout the route, there are indications of the Rhein’s formidable power, marked by high water marks. Fortunately, many of these signs are from earlier times.

Day 6: Bad Godesberg to Cologne

On the sixth day, despite its urban character, most of the route runs through lush greenery, forests and fields, which presenting a delightful surprise. The final stretch should not be rushed, as there is ample time to enjoy the scenery. Upon reaching Cologne, we dedicated our time to exploring the city; the scale of the city should not deter. A visit to the cathedral is an absolute must. The awe-inspiring size and grandeur of this magnificent structure are truly humbling.

Our last night:

The last night in Germany was marked by a delightful meal of bratwurst and ice cream, accompanied by an ample supply of local beer.

On the seventh day, we said farewell to Germany. The train journey from Köln to Frankfurt was both comfortable and spacious. Hessen, with its pleasant climate, generous hospitality, and relaxed lifestyle, left an indelible impression on us. Our brief visit was meticulously organised and supported by the dedicated team in Konstanz.
