Your journey begins in the baroque university town of Eichstätt. With its historic old town, which is characterized by magnificent buildings, the city invites you to take your first leisurely stroll. One highlight is Eichstätt Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Willibaldsburg Castle, which towers over the city, offers a breathtaking view over the Altmühltal valley and houses an interesting natural history museum. Eichstätt is the perfect starting point for your cycle tour in the Upper Palatinate.
On the second day, you start your cycle tour in the direction of Beilngries. You follow the leisurely Altmühltal cycle path, which takes you through the wide river landscape. Charming villages and the striking limestone cliffs of the Altmühltal Nature Park await you along the way. A highlight on the route is Hirschberg Castle, which towers majestically over the valley. Once you arrive in Beilngries, the enchanting old town with its historic towers and baroque town hall awaits you. Beilngries is known for its gastronomy, so treat yourself to a traditional Bavarian dinner.
The third day takes you further along the Altmühltal Cycle Path. A special stop on this route is the picturesque Prunn Castle, which is spectacularly perched on a rock above the Altmühl. At Essing, you will encounter the curved Tatzlwurm, one of the longest wooden bridges in Europe. The route continues towards Kelheim, where the Altmühl flows into the Danube. Visit the Liberation Hall on Michelsberg hill in Kelheim and treat yourself to a wheat beer in the evening from Bavaria's oldest surviving wheat beer brewery.
The last stage of your cycle tour through the Upper Palatinate takes you along the Danube to Regensburg.
