The route through the Black Forest is surprisingly relaxing. The cycle path takes you past typical Black Forest farmhouses with their low-hanging hipped roofs between densely wooded dark green hills. On your round trip from Freiburg you will overcome most of the elevation by train, so you will often have the pleasure of simply rolling downhill. This means you can not only observe the laid-back attitude of the Baden locals, but also experience it yourself. Cycling via Waldshut-Tiengen you will reach the High Rhine and visit Basel, the lively city of 3 countries. Past healing mineral springs, which were already used by the Romans, you will cycle through the southern foothills of the Black Forest, before reaching the first vineyards close to Freiburg.

Freiburg
Freiburg

Day 1: Individual arrival in Freiburg

This city is thought to be Germany’s warmest. The typical Bächle flowing through its historic centre guarantee a comfortable micro-climate in summer. The city’s centrepiece is its Roman-Gothic Minster. From Freiburg’s backyard mountain, the Schauinsland, you will be able to experience a breath-taking panoramic view of the hills of the Black Forest. Pre-booked rental bikes are ready for you at your hotel.

Day 2: Freiburg – Bonndorf, approx. 45 km + train ride

On your first day you will initially cycle about 10 km to Kirchzarten and take a train that will bring you from there to Titisee. On this ride through the Höllental Valley, you will master all inclines with ease. You will cycle past typical farmhouses with low-hanging hipped roofs, the Black Forest houses, to Bonndorf.

Day 3: Bonndorf – Waldshut-Tiengen, approx. 45 / 50 km

An additional day in Bonndorf is worthwhile, as it will give you the opportunity to explore the Wutachschlucht Gorge, one of the last intact wild river landscapes. Alternatively you can start cycling towards the Rhine straightaway, which lies 500 metres lower. This means you can leisurely roll downhill. Your destination Waldshut is located directly on the Swiss border.

Laufenburg at the Rhine

Day 4: Waldshut-Tiengen – Basel, approx. 65 / 70 km

Today you will be cycling to Bad Säckingen via Laufenburg, where you will find Europe’s longest covered wooden bridge. The town also has two exceptional museums on offer, the Rubbish Museum and the Trumpeteer Museum, which tells the romantic story of the Bad Säckingen Trumpeteer. You will later cycle along the Rhine’s northern bank toward Rheinfelden. To shorten the route you can board a train here (not included). Should you decide to continue by bike, a visit to the Roman fort Augusta Raurica is worthwhile.

Isteiner Klotz

Day 5: Basel – Badenweiler / Müllheim, approx. 45 / 50 km

You will now be leaving the lively city of Basel behind you and cycle toward the Isteiner Klotz. Once upon a time, it was surrounded by the floods of the Rhine, but now – after Tulla’s Rhine rectification – it sits quietly secluded from the river. This area of the Black Forest’s edge is home to water with healing properties and thus ideal for spas – some of them date back to Roman times.

Day 6: Badenweiler / Müllheim – Freiburg, approx. 40 / 35 km

The Markgräflerland seems very charming. The large amount of sunny days and the remarkably pure water mean that many special wine grapes grow here. Baden’s tranquillity can be found in villages and towns on the edge of the Black Forest. Later, you will reach Freiburg, Germany's southern-most large city. Art historian Jacob Burkhardt called the gothic church tower "the most beautiful tower in the world" in 1869.
