Cycling vacation in the Northern Black Forest – that‘s pure nature paired with very special moments of pleasure for all the senses – whether it‘s scenic eye candy, the fresh fragrant mountain air, the numerous hearty and sweet taste sensations, the relaxing baths in healing thermal water or simply the soothing tranquillity of the Black Forest valleys! You cycle through the river valleys of Murg, Enz, Nagold and Neckar. Each of the four river valleys of your cycling vacation in the Northern Black Forest has its own character and yet they all have one thing in common – beautiful landscapes! Long, drawn-out mountain ridges rise from picturesque valleys, which – it seems – are endlessly covered with dark green fairytale forests. Along the rivers you will encounter natural meadows, extensive fields and lush green river meadows. Small, rustic Black Forest villages line your path. In the foothills of the Black Forest, the Hermann Hesse town of Calw and Horb am Neckar are waiting to be explored. The overnight resorts of Freudenstadt and Bad Wildbad are renowned spa towns with no shortage of wellness offers for you. Thus, the cycling vacation in the Northern Black Forest offers you the perfect setting for a relaxing cycling trip.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Freudenstadt

Welcome to your cycling vacation in the Northern Black Forest! Check into your hotel and make yourself comfortable. Freudenstadt is not only the starting and ending point of your trip, but also the base for the next two cycling stages. Explore the town, which is rich in tradition. Stroll through Germany's largest market square with its fountains and water fountains. Along the arcades framing the square are neat little stores and cafes that invite you to stroll and enjoy. A slice of original Black Forest cake is the perfect way to set the mood for your cycling trip.

Day 2: Excursion to the Murg Valley: Freudenstadt – Rastatt, approx. 60 km + train ride

The first stage runs down the valley along the Murg, past lush green meadows, through shady forests and lined with rock formations. You leave Freudenstadt and soon reach Baiersbronn. You continue cycling on an old path through the narrowing Murg Valley to Forbach - probably the most picturesque section of the route. At Gernsbach you reach the Rhenish lowlands. Now you are practically rolling to Rastatt. Explore the baroque town with its historical buildings. The highlight is a visit to the Residence Palace - the Badish Versailles. Take the train back to Freudenstadt.

Day 3: Excursion to the Kinzig Valley: Freudenstadt – Hausach, approx. 50 km + train ride

The excursion into the Kinzig valley begins with a few meters of altitude through fairytale forest landscapes. You have now completed the most strenuous part of the day and reach the half-timbered town of Alpirsbach along the Kinzig River. Famous for the beer of the same name, the former monastery town is the ideal place for your lunch break. Now you have the choice, end the stage in Hausach or continue cycling to Gengenbach. No matter how you decide, the return trip to Freudenstadt you deny by train.

Day 4: Excursion to the Neckar Valley: Freudenstadt – Eutingen, approx. 50 km + train ride

On today's stage of your cycling vacation in the northern Black Forest, you will first cycle through a dreamlike forest landscape to Lossburg, the source of the Kinzig. Continue to Leinstetten on the Glatt, which you follow to the town of the same name. Visit the impressive moated castle. It dates back to the 15th century and is one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in southern Germany. Today it houses several museums worth seeing. Shortly after Glatt, you will meet the Neckar River, which will take you on a swinging route via Horb to Eutingen im Gäu. By train you return comfortably to Freudenstadt.

Day 5: Freudenstadt – Bad Wildbad, approx. 45 km

Today you are offered various perspectives on the legendary landscape of the northern Black Forest. First, the route takes you across the eastern range of hills of the Murg Valley to Enzklösterle. This is where the Enz River rises - your constant companion for the rest of the day. You cycle in the Enz valley with its high wooded slopes to your overnight destination Bad Wildbad. Steeped in history, this spa town has retained its elegant 19th-century flair. Take a stroll in the wildly romantic spa park with its historic buildings. Want to relax? Visit one of the two thermal baths and enjoy the healing effects of the water.

Day 6: Bad Wildbad – Calw, approx. 45 km

For the first part of the fifth stage of your cycling vacation, you will continue to follow the Enz River until you reach the gateway to the northern Black Forest - Pforzheim. The city is the center of the German jewelry and watch industry. Experience the world of jewelry up close during a visit to the jewelry museum or a stroll along the Goldsmith Mile. Along the Nagold you leave Pforzheim. Upstream - past Bad Liebenzell and the monastery of Hirsau, which is well worth seeing - you cycle in the picturesque Nagold valley. Your overnight stop today is the Hermann Hesse town Calw. Walk in the footsteps of the town's most famous son, for example, on a themed tour.

Day 7: Calw – Freudenstadt, approx. 60 km + train ride

The last stage of your journey begins idyllically. Following the Nagold you cycle through the Black Forest foothills past the shepherd town Wildberg to Nagold. You leave the Nagoldtal behind and change into the neighboring Neckartal - the last of the five valleys of your bike tour. Your stage destination Horb am Neckar has probably one of the most beautiful city silhouettes in Germany. Stroll through the winding alleys of the well-preserved old town. Climb the Horber Stäpfele and visit the collegiate church. Then cycle to Eutingen im Gäu and board the train that will take you back to Freudenstadt.
