Funen is not only Denmark's third largest island, but a true cyclist's paradise! Discover old harbour towns, romantic castles, lonely coasts and the lush green of Denmark's garden on our bike tour to Funen. We start in Flensburg. Along the Flensburg Fjord you will reach Sønderburg. The castle of the same name and the nearby Dybbøl Banke are worthwhile stops before your ferry trip to the island of Funen. Around Fåborg, Funen shows its hilly side. But don't worry about too difficult climbs, the highest elevation of the Funen Alps is a maximum of 128 metres. With the bridge over the Great Belt in view, you cycle from Svendborg along the west coast of Funen to Nyborg, one of Denmark's oldest towns. Our bike tour to Funen takes you to the seaside resort of Kerteminde. Not far from the harbour town, famous for its beautiful beaches, lies the Ladbyskibet, a Viking ship lying in a burial mound
absolutely worth seeing! The destination of our bike tour to Funen is Odense. Art, culture and something fairytale-like await you in the island's capital. Its most famous son is the poet and writer Hans Christian Andersen, whose fairy tales are known all over the world. He is commemorated in many places in the city. The medieval town centre with its small alleys and colourful houses will delight you just as much as the diverse museum landscape.Itinerary

Day 1: Individual arrival in Flensburg
Your bike tour to Funen starts in Flensburg, Germany's northernmost port city. Situated at the innermost corner of the fjord-like Flensburg Fjord, the city looks back on a history of more than 750 years. After checking into your hotel, explore the old town with its numerous sights from past centuries. A visit to the lively old harbour is particularly recommended. Discover classic sailing yachts and old cutters – maritime atmosphere included.
Day 2: Flensburg – Sønderborg, approx. 45 km
You cross the German-Danish border near Flensburg and follow the course of the Danish Baltic Sea Cycle Route. Enjoy the fresh breeze and the one or other break by the sea as you ride along the Flensburg Fjord. The tranquil town of Gråsten is an ideal stopover. The castle there is used by the royal family as a summer residence. The castle park is one of the most beautiful parks in Northern Europe. Dybbøl is worth a longer stop. The Dybbøl Banke History Centre, with its multimedia facilities, is a reminder of the German-Danish War, which the Danish troops lost to the Prussians in 1864. Visit the impressive Sønderborg Slot in Sønderborg, your destination for the day, which is now a museum looking at the culture and history of the border region.
Day 3: Sønderborg – Fåborg, approx. 35 km + ferry ride
The second stage of your bike tour to Funen first takes you across the island of Als. Denmark's eighth largest island in the Baltic Sea is characterised by cliffs, small bays, fjords and long sandy beaches. A short stopover is worthwhile at Augustenborg Castle. The castle and park are among the most beautiful and largest baroque complexes in Denmark. In Fynshav you take the ferry (included) to the island of Funen. You cycle across Horne Land, a hilly peninsula that was already inhabited in Viking times. Visit the Horne Kirke in Horne. It is one of Denmark's most unusual places of worship. The landmark of your stage destination Fåborg is the bell tower. From its top you have a fantastic view of the town and the sea.
Day 4: Fåborg – Svendborg / Troense, approx. 45 km
You leave Fåborg in a south-easterly direction and follow the beautiful, only slightly hilly route to your destination for the day, Svendborg. Visit the old town near the harbour, which is characterised by winding alleys, dreamy courtyards and countless half-timbered houses. The oldest among them is Anne Hvides Gård from 1560. Another highlight is Naturama. It shows the animal world of Denmark and Northern Europe on three levels – air, land and water. Discover the Sejlskibsbroen during an evening exploration of the harbour. There are many old wooden sailboats moored at this pier. You will spend the night in Svendborg or in the small shipping town of Troense on Tåsinge.
Day 5: Svendborg – Nyborg, approx. 55 km
Today you follow the course of Østersøruten, the Danish Baltic Sea Cycle Route, northwards on your bike tour to Funen. Almost always with the sea in view, you will reach the harbour town of Nyborg. The city on the Great Belt is one of the oldest cities in the country. Nyborg Slot was built in the 12th century. As Denmark's oldest royal castle, it served as a residence for Danish kings for centuries. In the immediate vicinity of the mighty castle is the Landporten, Denmark's longest fortress gate at 40 metres. A jewel of Nyborg is Mads Lerches Gård, today's town museum, in the half-timbered house-lined Slotsgade.
Day 6: Nyborg – Kerteminde – Odense, approx. 50 km
Today's cycling day takes you mainly along the beach-lined coast of the Great Belt. On the way, you will have many opportunities to take a dip or two in the cool water. The marine research centre Fjord & Bælt in Kerteminde provides insights into the marine ecosystem and allows you to experience harbour porpoises and seals up close. From Kerteminde, the last stage first takes you to Ladby. Ladbyskibet takes you back to the times of the Vikings. The only burial ship of the Viking Age in Denmark is hidden under a burial mound that is part of the Viking Museum. The destination of your bike tour to Funen is Odense, Denmark's third largest city. Take a boat trip and get to know Odense from the water – a different kind of city tour.
