Travel report: Cycling trip around Lake Constance

From our guests Heike and Hans

Stage 1: Around Untersee

The very first stage took us to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Reichenau.
There we were able to admire the beautiful vineyards by the lake and many fruit and vegetable plantations in the most beautiful sunshine.

The ferry crossing to Gaienhofen on the Höri was easy and we arrived at what is probably the most beautiful place on Lake Constance: Stein am Rhein.
Be sure to try the delicious bratwurst at the snack bar here (tip from the owner: always without mustard!!!).

Now my husband had the crazy idea of cycling "briefly" to Schaffhausen to see the Rhine Falls. It's only 50 kilometers there and back. But it's worth it.

After about 105 kilometers we were happily back in Constance.
But the highlight of the first day was a cow massage - machine in action!!!

Stage 2: Around Lake Überlingen

Amazingly fit, we set off along the Untersee to Radolfzell, our first destination for the day. Unfortunately, the church is currently being renovated, but there was still plenty to discover.

Through many orchards, we then arrived in Unteruhldingen via Überlingen, where we visited the pile dwellings. Certainly no fun in the heat. However, we had taken precautions and had a great lunch by the lake near Sipplingen beforehand and then briefly tried out the lido. After that, however, we immersed ourselves in the Bronze Age and Neolithic period.

Stage 3: From Constance via Meersburg to Kressbronn

It really is a pleasure to take the ferry towards Meersburg, you have a view of the town and the island of Mainau is also worth a visit. As we had already been to Meersburg a few times, we made our way to Friedrichshafen relatively quickly. First, the route leads along the main road for a few kilometers. In Friedrichshafen, you are rewarded with a very beautiful fountain and a great tower at the harbor (great tip and also completely free).
In Langenargen, you should also definitely climb the tower in Schoss Montfort, where you again have a wonderful view. But then be sure to stop at the Naturstandbad Kressbronn, where you can cool off and enjoy a delicious red apple cider. Highly recommended!!! (P.S.: Entry is also free with a guest card.)

Stage 4: Kressbronn - Höchst

Today we had to fight our way through the crowds (Lindau and Bregenz). So make sure you visit Wasserburg, it's nice and quiet here and the church is absolutely worth seeing.
In Lindau we still climbed the lighthouse at the harbor. The staircase is worth seeing, with great paintings and stories that are definitely worth the 3 euro entrance fee. Incidentally, the lion was currently an art project.
And don't forget, a trip to the Pfänder near Bregenz is a must. You can also do it by bike, but we didn't do it because of the crowds.
At the end of the day, we went to see the Bregenz lake stage, without a guided tour, but you can go inside in the afternoon and see the stage set without paying admission. Our tip: Menu of the day here at Restaurant Buehnedrei; at around 11 euros, it's very reasonably priced and we had a salad with Tyrolean Gröstel.

5th and unfortunately last stage: Höchst - Constance

Today we headed back to Constance via the Swiss side. Very beautiful and very quiet. The cycle path often leads directly along the shore or you are rewarded with a view of the lake. Passing very beautiful old and new villas, or as I always say: "You can't buy, you can only inherit", it really is a great end to the cycle tour.
A detour to Altenrhein to the Hundertwasser market hall is definitely worthwhile, a real highlight. The crosswalk in front of it is also worth mentioning. Of course, we also have to make a stop at the Würth Museum in Rorschach, as we live only 4 kilometers from the headquarters in Künzelsau. After that, we took a look at "happy" Arbon.
In Romanshorn we stopped for lunch and a swim at the lido. Here you have a great view of Meersburg and Friedrichshafen and the prices are reasonable. Above all, admission is free if you only stay for 1.5 hours and go to the restaurant.
We arrived back in Constance happy and full of impressions, where we naturally treated ourselves to an ice cream in the best ice cream parlor in Constance (Eisdiele Pampanin on the corner of Moltkestraße and Theodor-Heuss-Straße).
