The varied landscape brings with it some steep climbs that make a cycling holidays in England a challenge for experienced cyclists with a good physical shape.
Welcome to England's northernmost metropolis! The former mining and industrial city of Newcastle upon Tyne is the ideal starting point for your cycling vacation in England. In this lively student city, modern impulses meet more than a thousand years of history. Highlights include the impressive Tyne bridges, the historic castle and the Grainger Town district, the historic center of the city. The inhabitants of Newcastle are known as Geordies - as is their typical dialect.
After breakfast, you will receive your rental bikes (if booked) and your travel documents at your hotel. A comfortable transfer will then take you to the west coast of England to Whitehaven. On quiet country roads, you cycle up to Whinlatter Pass, a mountain pass with magnificent views. The descent takes you to Keswick on Derwentwater, the fourth largest lake in England. Before you reach the stage town of Threlkeld, it is worth stopping at Castlerigg Stone Circle, one of the most impressive and largest stone circles in England.
The second stage of your cycling vacation in England is mostly quiet on small country roads towards Penrith. On the way, it is worth taking a break at Greystoke Castle, which once served as the inspiration for the Tarzan legend. After a few more kilometers, you will reach Penrith. A detour to Lowther Castle, located just outside the town, is also recommended. There you can visit the impressive ruins and gain fascinating insights into the history. Only a short time later, you will finally reach your destination for the day, Edenhall.
Today, you can expect a challenging stage with a few metres of elevation gain. Once you reach the Hartside Pass, you can take a well-earned break and enjoy the impressive view of the surrounding landscape and the Solway Firth - all the way across to Scotland. You then cycle further down to Alston. The highest market town in England is located in the north of the Pennines, a low mountain range that is considered one of the most beautiful landscape regions in Great Britain.
From Alston, you cycle on the most hilly stage of your cycling vacation in England today. First you reach the former mining village of Nenthead, where you can still visit many accessible mines today. You reach the highest point of the route with the Black Hill at 609 meters. You roll on towards Stanhope with almost no inclines. The route then takes you through the beautiful, wild landscape of the Pennines before you reach the small village of Blanchland - your destination for today.
The last stage of your cycle tour in England takes you to the North Sea. You cycle through Consett, once a flourishing steel town, and follow a well-maintained route that takes you over several bridges and railroad viaducts to Gateshead. After crossing the Tyne, you first reach Newcastle. Continuing along the river, you finally reach Tynemouth. Treat yourself to a refreshing breath of salty North Sea air on one of the town's beaches. You will then be transferred back to Newcastle (included).
Your cycling vacation in England comes to an end after breakfast. You start your individual return journey.
