On a bike tour in Portugal you will experience the breathtaking and wild west coast of the country with all its scents, colors, bizarre rock formations and endless beaches. You will start in Lisbon, Portugals fascinating capital, and in just under a week cycle your way to Europes most southwesterly point, once thought to be the end of the world. On the way, you will get to know the wild Atlantic Ocean in all its glory, which sometimes meets jagged cliffs, sometimes natural sandy beaches. Likewise, you will cycle through pine groves and orange orchards as well as rice paddies on your bike tour in Portugal. You will pass through national parks, which offer a protected life to rare bird species, and enjoy the sound of the ocean and the salty air again and again. Anyone who sits in the saddle for an average of 60 kilometers per stage on a bike tour in Portugal and masters the one or other climb has earned the delicacies of the country's hearty and genuine cuisine in between or in the evening. Be it fish and seafood grilled over charcoal or a hearty stew, accompanied by a glass of red wine. Perfeito!

Day 1: Individual arrival in Lisbon

Welcome to your cycling vacation in Portugal! Explore the Lisbon's sights right after checking in at your hotel. The best place to start is the Baixa district, in the heart of Lisbon, with its tile façadea and narrow streets. Equally worth seeing is the Torre de Belém, right on the Tagus River. Not far from the tower, the bridge Ponte 25 de Abril spans the river. Nearly 2300 meters long, it is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. In the evening, enjoy dishes of Portuguese cuisine and treat yourself to a glass of port wine.

Day 2: Lisbon - Setúbal, approx. 65 km + ferry ride

The first section of your bike tour along the Atlantic coast in Portugal begins with a short ride to Lisbon harbour. You will take a ferry across the wide Tagus River to Seixal on the Setúbal Peninsula. You cycle south on the peninsula and reach the Arrábida Nature Park. Enjoy beautiful views over the coast, dotted with a beach or two. In your destination for the day, Setúbal, it is worth visiting the Forte de São Filipe above the town. The fortification once served to protect the mouth of the Sado River into the Atlantic.

Day 3: Setúbal - Sines, approx. 70 km + ferry ride

You will take the ferry to the Tróia peninsula in the morning. With a little luck, you might spot dolphins cavorting in the water. Not far from the coast of the island, you'll pass gorgeous, spacious beaches where you can plunge into the tides or simply enjoy the view of the seemingly endless Atlantic Ocean. On the way, miles of rice fields will catch your eye on Tróia. Rice cultivation came with the rule of the Moors in the 8th century. At Sines you have reached your destination for the day. The most famous son of the city is the navigator Vasco da Gama. He is commemorated by a statue right next to the Castello de Sines.

Day 4: Sines - Vila Nova de Milfontes, approx. 40 km

Today your bike tour along the Atlantic coast in Portugal takes you to one of the most natural stretches of coastline in Europe, that of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina. In the natural park, enjoy the abundant animal and plant life and wide beaches framed by shale and limestone cliffs. Via the small town of Porto Côvo, you will cycle through the typical Alentejo landscape with extensive fields, cork oak and pine groves and reach Vila Nova de Milfontes. Directly at the mouth of the Rio Mira into the Atlantic Ocean is the Forte de São Clemente. The old fortress served as early as the 16th century from attacks by pirates.

Day 5: Vila Nova de Milfontes - Aljezur, approx. 65 km

Today you will continue cycling through the nature park. We recommend taking your first break at the Cabo Sardão lighthouse, not far from the town of Odemira. At the rugged cliffs you not only have the opportunity to watch the roaring surf and enjoy the salty sea air, you can also observe storks that have set up their nests in the rocks unique in the world. With the picturesque village of Odeceixe you have reached the Algarve region. A few kilometers away, your stage destination Aljezur awaits you. The small town shines with its whitewashed houses, which are lined up between a river up the slope to a former castle.

Day 6: Aljezur - Sagres, approx. 60 km

Last but not least, your bike tour along the Atlantic coast in Portugal will take you to the end of the world. First, you will once again enjoy the incomparably beautiful view of the sea while cyclin. Soon you will reach the surfer's paradise Carrapateira, which lies in the middle of a magnificent dune landscape. The bike path continues to take you to Cabo de São Vicente, which many hundreds of years ago was considered the end of the world and marks the southwesternmost point of mainland Europe. Visit the lighthouse perched on a cliff before heading toward your destination of Sagres. At Praia do Tonel in the evening, you can not only watch the sunset, but look back on an exciting and impressive journey.
