Cycling tour along the Danube and Altmühl rivers

We - that's Gabi and Daniel from near Berlin and Claudia and Frank from Lübeck. Friends for a long time, we would like to spend a really nice week together this year. The offer from Radweg-Reisen promised us a beautiful route, comfortable hotels and an all-round carefree package that we have been looking forward to for almost 1 year. And then we finally set off...

Day 1: Arrival in Regensburg
On 19.06.2021 we arrive almost simultaneously at the hotel Ibis Styles in Regensburg. The location directly at the water, the nice weather, a nice reception and very good rooms increase our vacation mood and anticipation. After a short bike ride into the city center, we study the travel documents in a beer garden and are guided through the beautiful city center.

Day 2: Regensburg - Abensberg
A hot day and we leave early after a breakfast on the hotel terrace. The first impressions on the south bank of the Danube are really beautiful and we see many people in and on the water. We notice that we are missing a key. Fortunately, a call to Radweg-Reisen is enough and the transport of the key, together with our luggage, to the next accommodation is organized. Thus, after arriving in Kehlheim and a ride on the ship, we can enjoy the lunch break in the Weltenburg monastery. Afterwards a short jump into the Danube waves and the tour continues to the first destination in Abensberg. The Hundertwasser Tower there can be seen from afar and the comfortable Hotel Kneitinger is located in the middle of the old town, which is well worth seeing. A refreshing ice cream, a short break and then we enjoy the Bavarian cuisine. A successful first day on the bike.

Day 3: Abensberg - Neuburg on the Danube

This day first takes us past hop fields back to the Danube and we ride on the north side to Vohburg. The short detour through the Klein-Donau-Tor into the old town is worthwhile. Continuing in the direction of Ingolstadt, we experience a calm river behind the Danube weir, which almost looks like a lake, and pass several biotopes. The cozy beer garden in Ingolstadt invites us to take a break and then we continue through the beautiful floodplain forests. Unfortunately, we get lost and suddenly find ourselves in front of a large fallen tree. Not quite easy - but we find a way past it and stand in front of the charming hunting lodge Grünau, which we look at from all sides. Thereby we find our way back to the cycle path and continue to the stage destination Neuburg on the Danube. The view of Neuburg Castle impresses us and we gladly accept the short detour there before we move into our next accommodation at Hotel Bergbauer. Of course, we are rewarded with another delicious ice cream. We ask the hotel employee for a recommendation for dinner. We get it promptly and she also reserves us a table there - very nice.

Day 4: Neuburg on the Danube - Eichstätt
Today we leave Neuburg and after a few kilometers also the Danube. The ride leads us through the Urdonautal with views of worth seeing rocks and interesting castle ruins. Near the small village of Mauern we pass caves, which we can see up close after a short walk. In Dollnstein we take a break at the Gasthof Zur Post and decide to make a detour of 5km to the rock group "Zwölf Apostel". It's worth it - also because on the way back we discover a Kneipp water-treading basin in the Gailach in Altendorf and try it out immediately. Back on the planned route, we soon reach our stage destination Eichstätt and discover an Italian ice cream factory there with a truly spectacular selection of delicious ice cream varieties.

Day 5: Break in Eichstätt
This day is planned for a short rest and we stay for 2 nights at the Hotel Adler. Good timing, because it rains in the morning. But by the time we get to the city tour in the afternoon, the sun comes out again and we are impressed by all the sights and monuments in the city. Of course, we have another delicious ice cream and the day ends in a cozy courtyard beer garden.

Day 6: Eichstätt - Beilngries
This day on the bike leads us mostly directly along the Altmühl. In Pfünz we see the Roman fort, in Kinding the fortified church and on the way we take a refreshing bath in the bathing lake Kratzmühle near Pfraundorf - very varied. We reach Beilngries and since this stage is shorter than the other stages so far, we extend it to Berching. This medieval town is really impressive and we enjoy today's ice cream directly at the completely preserved town wall. We return along the Main-Danube Canal to Beilngries and check into our rooms at the Romantik Hotel Milipp. A butcher's shop belongs to this hotel, so we also stay there for dinner and deepen our freshly acquired Schafkopf knowledge.

Day 7: Beilngries - Regensburg
On the last leg of the journey, we first ride along the Altmühl River. However, this ends at Töging, where it flows into the Main-Danube Canal, which now dominates the Altmühl Valley all the way to Kelheim. Shortly before Dietfurt, we stop at the prehistoric adventure village Alcmona, the first station of the Altmühltal Archaeology Park. At the intermediate destination Riedenburg we start the 2nd boat trip to Kehlheim. On this stretch we see the beautiful castle Prunn and overcome the barrage in the lock Kelheim before we get back on the bike. It starts to rain and we already know the last kilometers from the beginning of our tour - so we pick up speed and reach Regensburg and the Ibis Styles hotel quite quickly. Of course there is an ice cream as a reward and we celebrate the end of our beautiful bike tour at a very good Italian restaurant away from the touristy city center.

Beilngries - Regensburg

The whole bike trip was really a pleasure - beautiful routes with interesting sights, great hotels in places worth seeing and a smooth organization. In addition, the weather has also played along and we have already planned in mind the next tour - Lake Constance, Munich Lakes or Lahn, let's see which it will be.
