Healthy North Sea air, the sound of the waves and seemingly endless views over the – our journey on the North Sea Cycle Path from Jutland offers all passionate cyclists (and those who want to become one) the full package of relaxation! Thatched houses, sheep grazing on dikes, red and white striped lighthouses and the interplay between low and high tide are just some of the many impressions you will gather on our trip on the North Sea Cycle Path from Jutland. You start in Esbjerg on the Danish North Sea coast. After leaving behind Esbjerg and Ribe, the south-western part of Jutland and at the same time the youngest and oldest city in Denmark, you will pass the border to Germany almost unnoticed. Before you follow the North Sea coastal cycle path southwards, a good portion of island feeling is of course not to be missed. You will get to know the queen of the North Sea – the Island of Sylt – as well as the Danish island paradises of Rømø and Fanø. The tour continues via the town of Husum to the Dutch town of Friedrichstadt and an excursion to the seaside resort of St. Peter-Ording. On our trip on the North Sea Cycle Path from Jutland, take a guided mudflat walk that will introduce you to the fascinating world of the seabed. Via the Dithmarschen, you will reach the Elbe in Brunsbüttel, whose course will take you to the heart of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Esbjerg

Your bike tour on the North Sea Cycle Path in Jutland starts in the Danish Esbjerg. The city was established around 150 years ago. From the summit of the Vandtårnet, you have a wonderful panoramic view over the city, the port and to the island Fanø. Or what about a trip to the Sæddig beach? It is surmounted by the striking sculpture The human at the sea.

Day 2: Esbjerg – Ribe, approx. 35 / 65 km + trip to the Island of Fanø

Make a detour to the island Fanø today, that you can easily reach by ferry (not included). While cycling around the island, you can experience a mix of dunes, beach forests and mud flats. With some luck, you discover a washed-up amber at the kilometer-long beach. Back on the mainland, the tour continues to Ribe, the oldest town of Denmark. In the middle of the old town, you can already see the cathedral of Ribe with its both unequal towers from afar. The Ribe VikingeCenter documents, that Ribe has already been populated by the time of the Vikings.

Port of Ribe

Day 3: Ribe – Havneby (Island of Rømø), approx. 45 km

From Ribe, it goes back to the North Sea. Via the street ribbon Rømødæmningen, you cycle to the Wadden Sea island Rømø at today’s stage of your trip on the North Sea Cycle Path in Jutland. The beaches of Rømø build the biggest sand beach of Northern Europe. Impressive! Discover the Kommandørgården, the whalebone fence and the Rømø Kirke from the year 1200 with a roundtrip around the island. You spend your night in Havneby, the main city of the island.

Day 4: Havneby – Island of Sylt – Niebüll / Schlüttsiel, approx. 20 / 35 km + ferry and train ride

From Havneby you can take the ferry (included) to the island of Sylt. A network of bike paths over 200 kilometers long offers many opportunities to get to know the island on a shorter or longer tour. Organize your time on Sylt just as you like before you take the train (included) over the Hindenburgdamm to Niebüll. Due to its proximity to Denmark, Danish and Frisian culture meet in this small town. You can learn more about the everyday and economic life of the North Frisians in the Friesisches Museum.

Day 5: Niebüll – Husum, approx. 55 / 40 km

On the North Sea Cycle Path in Jutland you cycle directly along the coast. Make a detour to the Hallig of Hamburg. The small peninsula is easily reachable by bike. At the end of the Hallig, the brew-house invites for a longer and promising stay. At your day’s destination Husum, every step reminds of the most famous son of the city, Theodor Storm. The author once called Husum the grey city at the sea. Far from it, because the colored and vivid port city is neither grey nor monotonous.

Husum Castle

Schloss vor Husum

Day 6: Husum – Tönning / Lunden, approx. 35 / 40 km

Today you are mainly away from the North Sea. From Husum, you will first cycle to Friedrichstadt. The town centre will remind you of a trip to a Dutch town. When the town was founded in the 17th century, Dutch immigrants settled here, bringing with them their architectural style and knowledge of canal building. Leave your bike and take a walk along the canals. Continue on to Tönning, whose Multimar Wattforum will introduce you to the world of the Wadden Sea. You will spend the night in Tönning or Lunden.

Day 7: Excursion to St. Peter Ording, approx. 55 / 65 km + train ride

After breakfast, take the train to St. Peter-Ording. The seaside resort is famous for its 12 kilometre long sandy beach. Watch kite surfers being pulled over the waves by the wind, treat yourself to a sunbath or take part in a mudflat hike. By bike, set course for the red-and-white striped Westerhever lighthouse, which catches your eye from afar. An ideal photo motif! Enjoy the wonderful view of the surroundings from its viewing platform before cycling back to Tönning or Lunden.

Day 8: Tönning – St. Michaelisdonn, approx. 60 / 70 km

From Tönning it goes back to the North Sea. It is worth to make a first stop at the Eider Barrage, the biggest coastal protection structure in Germany. Your next stop is Büsum. The town has a kilometer-long green beach, where you can enjoy wonderfully a sandwich filled with the crabs of Büsum. From the sea, you cycle to the Dithmarschen. You pass Meldorf, whose cathedral you can already see from afar and that is built in the typical North German brick Gothic. With St. Michaelisdonn, you reach today’s destination. The symbol of the town is Edda, a Dutch windmill.

Day 9: St. Michaelisdonn – Glückstadt, approx. 55 km

Through Dithmarschen region it goes to Brunsbüttel at today’s stage on the North Sea Cycle Path in Jutland. There, you reach the Kiel Canal. It has been in operation since 1895 and belongs to the most used artificial waterways in the world. At the canal lock, you can observe small and big ships, when you pass the canal impressively. Today’s destination Glückstadt was established in the 17th century according to drafts on the drawing-board. A culinary specialty is the herring of Glückstadt. Also known outside of Schleswig-Holstein, it is produced traditionally with old recipes.

Day 10: Glückstadt – Hamburg, approx. 55 km

Along the Elbe, you cycle towards your destination Hamburg. In Wedel, you encounter the ship welcoming station Willkomm-Höft. Big ships, that enter or leave the port of Hamburg, are greeted with the raised or lowered flag of Hamburg – including the national anthem of the home country. Arrived in Hamburg, there is a lot to see and to discover. Take a boat trip around the port of Hamburg, walk through Speichersadt (the warehouse district) and watch the resellers haggling at the legendary fish market.
