When you think of a cycling tour through Eastern Switzerland, you probably first think of strenuous stages with energy-sapping metres of altitude. But there is another way. You will discover the idyllic mountain villages, lively St. Moritz and the tranquillity of the Engadine in a surprisingly relaxed way. The numerous metres in altitude that the cycling tour through Eastern Switzerland entails are comfortably bridged by various transfers. The train ride to St. Moritz with the UNESCO-protected Albula line is certainly one of the highlights of the trip. On the bike you will discover small original villages and unspoilt countryside. The hospitality of the locals will delight you. Don‘t be surprised if you are welcomed in three different languages. In Canton of Grisons, German, Italian and Rhaeto-Romanic are spoken.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Constance

Welcome to Constance! It's best to plan your journey so that you still have enough time to explore the largest city on Lake Constance. Whether you take a stroll through the historic old town streets, enjoy a coffee at the harbor or pay a visit to the neighboring town of Kreuzlingen is up to you. The climb up the 193 steps to the tower platform of Constance Cathedral is certainly a highlight. A magnificent view over the city and Lake Constance is guaranteed.

Day 2: Constance - Splügen - Bonaduz, approx. 45 km + transfer

First of all, there is no cycling today. You can easily reach the beautiful mountain world by bus transfer. In Splügen you hop on the saddle and your cycle tour through Graubünden can begin. Cycle leisurely along the Hinterrhein through two impressive gorges carved out by the river. Marvel at the smooth, polished rock faces up to 300 meters high. Without much effort, you reach the small municipality of Bonaduz, which is the destination of the first stage.

Day 3: Bonaduz - Zernez, approx. 50 km + train ride

A few meters of altitude await you! But don't worry - you won't be overcoming them by bike, but by train. From Thusis to St. Moritz, you travel along a spectacular railroad line with numerous viaducts, bridges and spiral tunnels. Once you arrive in glamorous St. Moritz, you can enjoy the unique flair of this town. You will then experience a postcard idyll as you cycle through the picturesque Engadin with its richly decorated farms and stately patrician houses.

Day 4: Zernez - Scuol, approx. 30 km

Your cycle tour through Graubünden takes you along the Inn today. You pass through the small mountain village of Guarda, which lies high above the river and owes its name to the magnificent view. Cycle leisurely through the village streets and return the friendly "Bun di" of the locals with a greeting. You will soon reach Scuol, your destination for today's stage. Relax in the Bogn Engiadina thermal spa (not included) or visit Tarasp Castle, the majestic landmark of the Engadin.

Day 5: Scuol - Vaduz, approx. 60 km + train ride

To complete today's stage of your cycle tour through Graubünden, the first section is once again covered by train. From Klosters, you cycle comfortably downhill until you reach the Rhine at Landquart. Without much effort, you cycle along the banks through the home of the children's heroine Heidi into the small Principality of Liechtenstein. Vaduz Castle, which serves as the residence of the princely family, can be seen from afar.

Day 6: Vaduz - St. Gallen, approx. 60 km + train ride

First you follow the flat riverside paths of the Rhine before leaving the river cycle path. In Altstätten, you and your bike board the train. The train ride to Gais bridges a few meters in altitude that you don't have to pedal. Back in the saddle, you cycle through the beautiful Appenzellerland through picture-book Swiss countryside. In St. Gallen, visit the beautiful old town and the baroque abbey library.

Day 7: St. Gallen - Constance, approx. 45 km

You roll comfortably downhill until you reach Lake Constance near Arbon. The route continues through well-kept Swiss villages and apple orchards, mostly along the shore. There are numerous opportunities for a break or a dip in the refreshing lake along the way. Your cycle tour through Graubünden ends in Constance, the starting point of your journey. How about a visit to the Rosgarten Museum or the Sea Life Aquarium (not included)?
