When you think of a cycling tour through Eastern Switzerland, you probably first think of strenuous stages with energy-sapping metres of altitude. But there is another way. You will discover the idyllic mountain villages, lively St. Moritz and the tranquillity of the Engadine in a surprisingly relaxed way. The numerous metres in altitude that the cycling tour through Eastern Switzerland entails are comfortably bridged by various transfers. The train ride to St. Moritz with the UNESCO-protected Albula line is certainly one of the highlights of the trip. On the bike you will discover small original villages and unspoilt countryside. The hospitality of the locals will delight you. Don't be surprised if you are welcomed in three different languages. In Canton of Grisons, German, Italian and Rhaeto-Romanic are spoken.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Constance

Welcome to Constance! Try to plan your arrival in a way that leaves you enough time to explore the largest city around the lake. It's up to you if you want to stroll through the streets of the historic city, drink a cup of coffee at the harbour, or maybe even visit the neighbouring city Kreuzlingen. One of the highlights in Constance has to be the view on top of the tower of the Minster of Constance. From up there you’re guaranteed a breathtaking view of the cities surroundings and the lake.

Day 2: Constance – Splügen – Bonaduz, approx. 45 km + transfer

First of all, there is no cycling today. You can reach the beautiful mountain world comfortably by bus transfer. In Splügen you will get into the saddle and your cycling tour through Eastern Switzerland can begin. You cycle leisurely along the Posterior Rhine through two impressive gorges carved by the river. Marvel at the smoothly polished rock faces up to 300 metres high. Without much effort, you reach the small community of Bonaduz, which is the destination today.

Day 3: Bonaduz – Zernez, approx. 50 km + train ride

Today you will gain quite a bit of height on your tour. But don’t worry, this will mostly be by train. Be ready for a spectacular train ride from Thusis to St. Moritz, passing countless viaducts, bridges, and spiral tunnels. Once you have arrived in the sophisticated city of St. Moritz you can really enjoy the unique flair of the city. After leaving the city by bike you are treated to the beautiful view of the landscape with its old stately patrician houses and and pretty farms.

Day 4: Zernez – Scuol, approx. 30 km

Your cycling tour through Eastern Switzerland today takes you along the Inn River. You will pass through the small mountain village of Guarda, which lies high above the river and owes its name to the magnificent view. Cycle leisurely through the village alleys and return the friendly "Bun di" of the locals with a greeting. Soon you will reach Scuol, your stage destination today. Enjoy the Bogn Engiadina thermal baths (not included) or visit Tarasp Castle, the majestic landmark of the Engadine.

Day 5: Scuol – Vaduz, approx. 60 km + train ride

To complete today's stage of your cycling tour through Eastern Switzerland, the first stretch is again bridged by train. From Klosters you roll comfortably downhill until you reach the Rhine at Landquart. Without much effort, you cycle along the banks through the home of the children's heroine Heidi into the small Principality of Liechtenstein. Even from a distance you can see Vaduz Castle, which serves as the residence of the princely family.

Day 6: Vaduz – St. Gallen, approx. 60 km + train ride

First you follow the flat paths along the banks of the Rhine before you leave the river cycle path. In Altstätten you board the train together with your bike. The train ride to Gais covers a few metres of altitude that you don't have to pedal. Back in the saddle, you cycle through the beautiful Appenzell Region through Swiss picture book countryside. In St. Gallen, visit the beautiful old town and the baroque Abbey Library.

Day 7: St. Gallen – Constance, approx. 45 km

You roll comfortably downhill until you reach Lake Constance near Arbon. The route continues through well-kept Swiss villages and apple orchards mostly along the shore. Along the way there are numerous opportunities for a break or a dip in the refreshing lake. Your cycling tour through Eastern Switzerland ends in Constance, the starting point of your journey. How about a visit to the Rosgarten Museum or the Sea Life Aquarium (not included)?
