Back to nature by bike. But then back to the hotel? Not on this trip! From Passau to Vienna you cycle along the Danube and always spend your family cycling vacation on a farm. The farmers are still active, so you will encounter a wide variety of animals, but you will also have discovered the joy of accommodation. Get up in the morning to freshly baked bread and try homemade jam and handmade cheese, which you certainly won‘t find in the supermarket. On the day‘s stages, the Danube is the main focus. At the end you will reach the capital of Austria and go home with the feeling of having experienced something very special, something not everyday.
Three rivers, flowing in three directions converge in Passau: the Danube, Inn and Ilz river. This unique spectacle is just one of the reasons why you should arrive early for your family cycling vacation along the Austrian Danube. Discover the baroque old town with St. Stephen's Cathedral at its center. The view of the city from the fortress is unique.
Today, your nature experience along the Danube begins. You cycle leisurely out of Passau, through green meadow landscapes via Obernzell and Engelhartszell Abbey. At lunchtime, take time for a break in a typical beer garden – with regional delicacies and a cool drink under chestnut trees. In the evening, homemade pastries from the landlady await you – a piece of Austrian baking culture with heart.
Today, a natural wonder awaits you: the Schlögener Schlinge – an almost meditative bend in the Danube, nestled in dense forests. A short climb on foot leads to the breathtaking Schlögener Donaublick, a magnificent viewpoint. Afterwards, you roll through small towns such as Obermühl to charming Aschach. There, the riverbank invites you to linger – perhaps with an ice cream right on the promenade.
In the morning, you roll leisurely through Feldkirchen to Ottensheim, where the train takes you to Linz—time for a stroll or coffee in the main square. Then you continue along the Danube through the Machland region. Your accommodation: a quiet farm with a large garden and perhaps a glass of fresh milk for an evening snack.
You cycle through fertile land, past orchards and old farmhouses. In Grein, it‘s worth making a short detour to the municipal theater—the oldest in Austria. In the late afternoon, you reach Sarling, where you are greeted with a hearty „Grüß Gott“—and perhaps a glass of cider.
Today you follow the Danube through the second part of the Wachau. The region was fiercly disputed during the centuries due to the fertile soil of the region and the advantage of the Danube river. Thus you'll find several castle ruins as evidence. Such as the Hinterhaus ruins near Spitz and Dürnstein Castle. Here according to legends, Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned. In addition to its wine the Wachau region is famous for growing apricots.
Your last stage of your bike vacaction along the Austrian Danube begins with a train ride to Tulln. Here you get back on your bike for the last time and enjoy a leisurely ride to Vienna. One afternoon is certainly not enough to get to know Austria's capital city in total. However, there should be just enough time for a walk to the Prater public park or a visit to one of its iconic cafés.
