Cycle tour through Austria from Salzburg to Vienna

Day 1: Individual arrival in Salzburg

The earlier you arrive, the more time you have to explore the world-famous Mozart city of Salzburg. Numerous highlights await you, such as the Mirabell and Hellbrunn palaces and the Getreidegasse with Mozart's birthplace. The Hohensalzburg Fortress is enthroned high up on the Festungsberg. Enjoy the wonderful view of the baroque old town from there.

Welcome to Salzburg!

Day 2: Salzburg – Burghausen, approx. 60 km

Spend a relaxing first day in the saddle and discover the small town of Oberndorf not far from Salzburg. Here you will find the small Silent Night Chapel, which is dedicated to the poet and composer of the famous Christmas carol. Cycle through extensive alluvial forests and along the Salzach to Burghausen. From afar, you can already see the seemingly endless battlements and towers of the longest castle complex in the world. After exploring the castle, make yourself comfortable in a beer garden or a rustic vaulted cellar with regional delicacies.

Day 3: Burghausen – Schärding, approx. 70 km

The river changes, but the beautiful nature remains. The small towns along the Inn are strung together like pearls on a necklace. Cycle through Gothic Braunau and soon reach Reichersberg, accompanied by numerous bird colonies. A guided tour of the Augustinian canons' monastery will give you an impressive insight into the life and history of the priests. You will reach another gem in your stage destination of Schärding. The Silberzeile and the Christophorus Fountain are just a few of the sights that you should not miss in the baroque town.

The next highlight follows immediately along the Inn – Passau. After a short visit to the cathedral and the Veste Oberhaus, you cycle downstream accompanied by the Danube. Engelhartszell is well worth a break. Here you will find the only Trappist monastery in Austria. Treat yourself to a liqueur or cheese produced in the monastery for refreshment. You have reached your destination for the day at the natural wonder of Upper Austria – the Danube Loop. This impressive, unique sight will stay with you long after your cycle tour through Austria is over.

Historical squares, buildings and museums bring you closer to the history of the city. Try a slice of Linzer Torte in one of the many cafés. Rested and refreshed, you cycle on to Enns. Stroll along the old city wall and climb the 60-metre-high city tower. Spend the evening and night in Austria's oldest town or in a nearby village.

The Danube remains your constant companion on your cycle tour through Austria today. Stroll through the golden town Grein, which will enchant you with its nostalgic charm. Cycle on to the Strudengau. Once feared by sailors due to its whirlpools and shallows, today it is a beautiful cultural landscape that is second to none. You then travel along the Danube to Maria Taferl. With its parish church, this small town is one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Austria.
