It encompases a rafting experience on the Minho River, a canoe trip or a mountain tour in Vila Nova de Cerveira and a surfing course at the Atlantic coast. Welcome to Portugal! After your arrival in Porto, your family vacation by bike in Portugal begins with a transfer to Monção. Settle into your cozy country hotel, relax by the pool or explore the gardens while the children let off steam. Take a short walk through the town to see the medieval walls, quiet squares and riverside paths. Monção is known for its thermal baths and the Alvarinho wine. Visit the Brejoeira Palace - an elegant estate that sets the scene for the tranquil, nature-filled days ahead.
Explore the city and its surroundings by bike on shady paths along the river or take a break in the well-tended and peaceful green spaces of Monção. In the morning, you can take part in an optional rafting tour on the tranquil Minho. It is beginner and child friendly. While you glide leisurely through gentle currents and small rapids, you get to enjoy the surrounding landscape. Afterwards, a traditional Alvarinho winery invites you to a guided tasting session. Get to know the winemaker's family and learn how ancient knowledge has been preserved over generations and combined with contemporary methods.
Your cycling adventure begins today. You cycle east along the Minho River to the Atlantic Ocean, the path follows a former railroad line. Your journey takes you through tiny villages, cornfields and vineyards. Here in the demarcated Vinho Verde region the famous dry white wine is produced. On the way, you will pass several monuments to the battles between Portugal and Spain such as the impressive 17th century fortresses in Valença and Vila Nova de Cerveira. In the afternoon, you will have time to explore the historic center of Cerveira and stroll through its medieval streets. Enjoy a relaxing break in one of the numerous street cafés and snack bars. In the main square you will find a monument to the War of the Spanish Succession.
Today we invite you to visit the city of Valença, an notable historic city. Wander down the narrow streets and enjoy the view of the rugged mountains which embrace the River Minho.
The river forms the natural boarder to Spain. As such historically, Valença was a crucial fortress protecting Portugal's independence by resisting the various attacks by their neighbors to the north. Take the opportunity to explore the historic city center and enjoy the local gastronomy.
If you've chosen the adventure package: today in the heart of the Peneda-Gerês National Park you'll experience a half-day canoe trip on the river or a half-day mountain tour by off-road vehicle.
Today begins with a one-hour boat trip in the morning filled with stories connecting the two countries that the Miño River separates. Enjoy the fauna and flora of the region, the islands and sandbanks are a natural habitat for birds. This boat tour ends in the beautiful old town of Caminha. Here you'll start your bike tour to Viana do Castelo. Now the Atlantic Ocean is your companion- its splendor, vastness and breeze will set the pace for your journey today.
On the way to Viana do Castelo, you will pass Afife, one of Portugal's most well known beaches for surfing and
bodyboarding. The old Montedor lighthouse is located in Carreço. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century. It is still essential for fishermen to find their way back after a hard day's work. Now continue on to Viana do Castelo, a true picture postcard town. The town stretches from the foot of the mountain to the sea. Viana was funded by the Romans and is still considered one of the most important ports in the north of the Iberian Peninsula.
Today, take the Santa Luzia cable car - the longest in Portugal - up to the basilica. The view of the city is spectacular, you'll see the river and the Atlantic Ocean. The ride itself is a thrill for children and adults alike!
Connect to the sea with the optional surf lesson- enjoy the Atlantic! The equipment will be provided. Stroll along the marina and watch the fishing boats return. Visit the floating museum on the hospital ship Gil Eanes which still tells the stories of its seafarers and explorers. It's the perfect conclusion to a day of discovery, laughter and memories in the green and golden north of Portugal.
Visit Barcelos and discover the famous weekly market on Thursdays. It is one of the oldest markets in Portugal reflecting its lively regional culture. Take a leisurely stroll through the alleyways, discover hand-painted ceramics, woven baskets
and typical specialties.
Take the opportunity to paint one of the famous Barcelos cockerels guided by a local artisan. Here every family member can create their own copy of the Portuguese lucky charm - a personal and colorful souvenir.
Then take the train back to Viana do Castelo, and enjoy a relaxed evening within a maritime atmosphere.
After breakfast, it's time to say goodbye. Unfortunately, your family cycling vacation in Portugal comes to a close today. The included transfer will return you back to Porto Airport. From here you will start your journey home. We hope you had an unforgettable cycling trip through Portugal!
