Cycling Tour through Andalusia

Sun-drenched Seville is the capital of the southern Spanish region of Andalusia and has become world-famous as the cradle of flamenco. Before you start your cycle tour through Andalusia, let yourself be carried away by the colorful hustle and bustle in the narrow streets. Seville is located directly on the banks of the Guadalquivir and numerous traces bear witness to its rich Arab past. One example is the Moorish royal palace Alcázar with its richly decorated arches and tiles. The Gothic cathedral, which houses the tomb of Columbus, is also well worth a visit. Two world exhibitions have given the city futuristic buildings and lush parks.

You cycle along the Guadaíra river through sunflower fields and one of the most fertile agricultural regions in Andalusia. Your destination is Carmona, which is not far away. The town is one of the oldest in Andalusia. Fascinating are the traces that Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Goths, Moors and Spaniards have left behind in the course of its 5000-year history. For example, there is a Roman mosaic depicting the head of Medusa in the inner courtyard of the town hall.

You leave Carmona, one of the most interesting small towns in Andalusia. The longest stage of the cycling tour in Andalusia is pleasant to cycle despite its many kilometers. You cycle through a fertile landscape known for its grain and olive cultivation. You will spend the night in the small town of Montellano, whose first settlements can be traced back to the Bronze Age. After a long day on the bike, enjoy a typical dish from the region: fried garlic or carline thistle.

You cycle through the spectacular landscape of the foothills of the Sierra de Grazalema. Arcos de la Frontera, built directly on the steep cliff, greets you from afar. This enchanting little town is the capital of the famous white villages of Andalusia. Its inhabitants also call their town the gateway to the white villages. A total of 30 of these beautiful mountain villages belong to the select circle of whitewashed houses adorned with colorful flowers. From the listed old town, you can enjoy a spectacular panorama of the valley of the Río Guadalete.

Gentle hilly landscape takes you further and further towards the Costa de la Luz on the Atlantic coast. Jerez de la Frontera, the overnight stop, is in stark contrast to the tranquillity you enjoyed in the previous days. You spend the night in one of the largest cities in Andalusia, the stronghold of sherry and Andalusian horse breeding. The city is also famous for its fighting bulls and flamenco. But that's not all: the old town is also an absolute eye-catcher and has numerous beautiful buildings such as the cathedral and the oldest building in the city, the Alcázar. Visit a dance performance or the Royal Andalusian Riding School!

You should make your first stop on this stage in the small fishing village of El Puerto de Santa María, which lies in the bay of Cádiz. The small town is known for its beautiful beach and the sherry fino produced here. Not far, then you will have reached the destination of your cycling tour through Andalusia: Càdiz, situated on a headland, is one of the oldest cities in Europe and was allegedly founded by Hercules himself. Climb the bell tower of the cathedral and enjoy a sweeping view of the sea.
