Why don´t you take some time for cycling holidays and follow the river Weser from its source to its estuary where it flows into the North Sea. Enrich your journey by experiencing the Wadden Sea- an exciting contrast to the regions Weser Highland and Middle Weser you will have explored up until now. The harsh, damp sea air, the mud flats and the coastal cities Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven have their very own appeal. The cycling holiday along the Weser is also well suited for unexperienced cyclists.
The starting point of your journey is impressive, where the Werra and Fulda rivers join to form the Weser. Hann. Münden impresses with its half-timbered architecture and masterpieces of the Weser Renaissance. Embedded in historic fortifications, the Old Werra Bridge, the mighty Guelph Castle and the town hall await your visit. In the late afternoon, there will be an information talk and the bike handover.
Your first stage starts at the Weserstein and takes you through the Weser Uplands, past Reinhardshagen and the former Benedictine monastery of Bursfelde in Romanesque style. In the pretty baroque town of Bad Karlshafen, you can visit the brine thermal baths or the Huguenot Museum. The small town of Beverungen attracts visitors with its well-preserved historical buildings and the remains of a castle from 1330.
Today you first leave the foothills of the Solling behind you before you reach Fürstenberg Castle on the Weser Cycle Path, another example of the Weser Renaissance that is well worth seeing. Rebuilt around 1600 as a hunting lodge, it offers a magnificent view of the Weser valley. Passing the old Hanseatic town of Höxter with its many half-timbered buildings, you reach Bodenwerder, Baron Münchhausen's home town.
From Holzminden and Bodenwerder, known for their perfumes and aromatic essences, you follow the Weser cycle path through romantic villages to Hameln. Pied Piper open-air plays and the Pied Piper House remind us of the origins of the world-famous legend. Images of the Pied Piper, who is said to have appeared in 1284, can also be found in many corners of the town.
From Hamelin, you cycle to the famous spa town of Bad Oeynhausen with its extensive spa facilities and the Aqua Magica, a special kind of landscaped garden, before crossing the Weser and Wiehengebirge mountains at the Westphalian Gate and cycling into the North German Plain. At the end of the day, you will be greeted by Minden, where you will find interesting buildings from different eras in the old town.
Wide, lush green meadows have replaced the wooded hills, with only the windmills breaking the view into the distance. You are now in the historic area of the Middle Weser. Along the Weser cycle path, fruit fields with fresh fruit beckon you to pick your own. The day's destination is the old fortress town of Nienburg. Traces of its eventful history can be found throughout the town – follow the bear paws!
The landscape of the Middle Weser is characterized by the flat Wesermarsch, fields, forests and vast moor and heathland areas. In Verden you will find the cathedral and the Historical Museum. The town gained importance as a horse and riding town. This is evidenced by the still very successful horse breeding and the internationally renowned horse auction, which has been held since 1949.
Today you are only cycling a short distance: the Hanseatic city of Bremen is waiting to be discovered. Bremen combines metropolitan flair with coziness, historical ambience with modernity, cultural diversity with a typical Hanseatic atmosphere like no other. Don't miss a visit to the Schnoor, Bremen's oldest quarter.
After a visit to the Bremen Town Musicians and the Bremen Roland, you continue cycling through Germany's smallest federal state towards the North Sea. As you cycle further along the Weser, you will pass through Blumenthal, whose nature is unique. Once you arrive in Elsfleth, you will reach one of the oldest towns on the Lower Weser, where you can round off your day's cycling in the old town.
In Brake, the Maritime Museum in the Telegraph Tower is well worth a detour. A fresh breeze, the smell of salt in the air and lots of sea and seagulls show you that you are on the coast. In Bremerhaven, it's worth visiting the Schaufenster Fischereihafen, a cultural and communication center with small stores, arts and crafts, restaurants and a seafood cooking studio.
Your stage takes you through Wurster Land, the gateway to the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. Let your gaze wander over the sea and mudflats and enjoy the fresh North Sea air. Once you arrive in the seaside town of Cuxhaven, we recommend a walk by the sea, where you can marvel at the Alte Liebe harbor bulwark and the famous Dicke Berta lighthouse.
