The Vltava Cycle Route is not a typical river cycle route, but an exciting journey of discovery through the hilly landscape of Bohemia. Do you already have Bedřich Smetana's Vltava melody in your head? The Czech composer described the course of the Vltava in music. You follow the varied river by bike. You start your tour on the Vltava Cycle Route in the Golden City of Prague. There is hardly a more exciting city in Europe than the dynamic Czech capital with its old European, romantic flair! Along the Bohemian lifeline, you will encounter mystical forests, vast reservoirs, old monasteries, romantic castles and defiant fortresses. Your overnight stops, especially Český Krumlov, will delight you with their beautiful historical buildings from different eras. Try the specialties of the hearty Bohemian cuisine and treat yourself to an original Budweiser beer! After a week of cycling through the hilly landscape of the Czech Republic and Upper Austria, the Three Rivers City of Passau marks the end of your cycle tour on the Vltava Cycle Route. The breathtaking views will more than make up for the challenging stages, during which you will have to master one or two climbs.

Day 3: Sedlčany – Písek, approx. 70 km

Today you cross the deep green Bohemian forest on the Vltava Cycle Route. At Milešov, you will see the Vltava reservoir and soon reach Orlík. You can see the castle there from afar, perched high above the Vltava on a rocky spur. The next castle, Zvíkov Castle, awaits you just a few kilometers further on. Due to its location on a promontory at the confluence of the Vltava and Otava rivers, it was one of the most important and most difficult castles to conquer in Bohemia in the Middle Ages. Today's destination is the picturesque small town of Písek on the gold-rich tributary of the Vltava – the Otava. Visit the Gothic stone bridge, which is the oldest of its kind in the Czech Republic.

Enjoy the beautiful primeval and cultural landscapes along the Otava today. With Týn nad Vitavou, you will come across one of the oldest South Bohemian towns along the way. A small forest path leads you to Hluboká Castle, which towers high above the Vltava. Stroll through the impressive park and visit the magnificent building, which was once a castle. None other than Windsor Castle served as a model for the neo-Gothic style reconstruction. You follow the Vltava to Budweis, the center of South Bohemia. The city is not only famous for its world-famous beer. The extensive market square with picturesque buildings from the Gothic and Renaissance periods is also worth a visit.

Along the way, you will come across secluded little farming villages before another highlight of your trip awaits you at today's stage destination. Český Krumlovis one of the most beautiful towns in the Czech Republic. The town is known as the Pearl of Šumava and there is something to discover on almost every corner. Take a stroll through the old town, lined with historic buildings in Renaissance and Baroque styles. You also have to see the extensive castle complex high above the Vltava.
