A unique cycling scenery awaits you on the cycle tour around the Little Belt: Wide, gently rolling fields alternate with dense beech forests that reach all the way to the coast. Numerous smaller and larger islands create fjord-like landscapes. You start the cycle tour around the Little Belt in Sønderborg on the island of Als. Initially, you will cycle mostly along the coast of the Little Belt. On the way, you may be lucky enough to spot porpoises cavorting in the Little Belt. On the island of Funen, beautifully situated manor houses and castles await you, as well as unspoilt beaches and lush green landscapes. No wonder the world-famous author Hans Christian Andersen found inspiration for his fairy tales here. It is not only nature that scores points. Day 1: Individual arrival in Sønderborg
Welcome to the island of Als! Your cycle tour around the Little Belt begins on Denmark's eighth largest island. The small island impresses with cliffs, small bays and extensive sandy beaches. The largest town on Als is Sønderborg, your starting point. After your arrival at the hotel, visit the impressive Sønderborg Slot. The former castle has guarded the entrance to the Als Sund since the 12th century and today houses a museum about the culture and history of the region.
Day 2: Sønderborg – Åbenrå, approx. 35 km
On the Baltic Coast Cycle Route you cycle relaxedly over the Sundewitt peninsula. Take your first break at Sandbjerg Castle. It is located directly on the Als Sund and is one of the most elegant palaces in Southern Jutland. You continue to Nydam Mose, a bog which once served as a sacrificial site. Your stage destination Åbenrå awaits you with a townscape characterised by a picturesque ensemble of burghers' and craftsmen's houses.
Day 3: Åbenrå – Christiansfeld, approx. 40 / 70 km
Today's stage of your cycle tour around the Little Belt takes you northwards. Take a longer break in Haderslev. The striking cathedral in the centre of the town is particularly worth a visit. It is considered the most beautiful Gothic church in Denmark. Take a trip on an excursion boat across Haderslev Dam and let a different kind of wind blow around your nose. Back on the saddle, you will roll comfortably through the peaceful countryside to Christiansfeld. The town was built on the drawing board about 250 years ago. The aim was to build the ideal town.
Day 4: Christiansfeld – Middelfart, approx. 45 / 65 km
After tasting the typical Christiansfeld gingerbread – the Honningkager – you cycle through the wooded region to Kolding. From a distance you can already see the old royal castle Koldinghus with its mighty tower, from which you have a wonderful view over the town. Not far from the coast of the Little Belt, the route continues to Middelfart. Via the Lillebæltsbroen you reach the town and at the same time the island of Funen.
Day 5: Middelfart – Odense, approx. 60 / 65 km
Today your cycle tour around the Little Belt leads you to Odense. You cycle through idyllic landscapes to Denmark's third largest city. Odense is the birthplace of the author Hans Christian Andersen, who became world-famous for his fairy tales. He is remembered in many places in the city. Visit the H. C. Andersen Hus and the H. C. Andersens Barndomshjem to learn more about his life.
Day 6: Odense - Fåborg, approx. 50 km
Today you cycle through the heart of Funen and reach Fåborg in the south of the island. The closer you get to your destination for the day, the more noticeably hilly the terrain becomes. You pass the Svanninge Bakker, a wooded area popularly known as the Funen Alps. In Fåborg, it is worth visiting the Klokketårnet. The bell tower offers you a wonderful view over the idyllic small town, the sea and the island world of the Danish South Sea.
Day 7: Fåborg – Sønderborg, approx. 45 / 35 km + ferry
The last stage of your cycle tour around the Little Belt is mostly flat and takes you first over the Horne Land peninsula. It was named after the small town of Horne, whose Horne Kirke is one of the most unusual churches in Denmark. The ferry (included) takes you from Bøjden to Fynshav on the island of Als. Finally after cycling across the tranquil island you reach your destination Sønderborg.
