Eerstmal en Koppke Tee, Low German for: First a cup of tea. This is certainly a cosy way to spend your cycle tour through East Frisia. With a cup of genuine Frisian tea in your hand, you can enjoy the wonderfully clear air of the North Sea and the views of the offshore islands. For eight days, you will immerse yourself in the East Frisian landscape characterised by moors and the sea. Look forward to the finest sandy beaches, lighthouses, the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park, ship-in-bottle museums, crab cutters and seals. You will ride, hopefully with a tailwind, across the flat land, along dead-straight canals, through picturesque coastal regions with romantic harbours and endless dikes. A visit to Norderney is something very special! Cycle through the diverse landscape of the second largest North Sea island, visit the wreck of a shell dredger or simply take a walk along the long sandy beach. East Frisia is proud of its cultural heritage and cultivates it to this day. You can hear this immediately in the Low German language and the East Frisian humour. This beautiful region is garnished with exciting and dreamy little towns. Experience wonderful days by the sea!

Map for Cycle tour through East Frisia

Day 1: Individual arrival in Oldenburg

Your Cycle tour through East Frisia begins between the North Sea, Bremen and Ammerland, in beautiful Oldenburg. The atmosphere of the university city is lively due to the more than 20,000 students, but there are still plenty of quiet corners in the winding streets of the cute city center. Visit the historic Oldenburg Castle, which was built at the beginning of the 17th century on the foundations of a medieval moated castle in the Renaissance style. The adjoining garden is a beautiful sight with its 200-year-old rhododendrons and old trees.

Day 2: Oldenburg – Wiesmoor, approx. 55 km

The first day on the saddle takes you through the beautiful Ammerland parkland, which is famous for its numerous gardens and parks. The rhododendrons bloom profusely. The first destination is the spa town of Bad Zwischenahn, idyllically situated on the Zwischenahner Meer. The Park of Gardens is located in the Rostrup district. Stroll through the 43 themed gardens and enjoy the view from the 20-metre-high observation tower over the 14-hectare park. Spend the night in Wiesmoor, the youngest and second smallest town in East Frisia

Day 3: Wiesmoor – Emden, approx. 55 km

Leave the climatic health resort of Wiesmoor and cycle to the secret East Frisian capital of Aurich, which has been a royal seat for centuries. Visit the highly controversial Sous Tower and the national shrine of the Frisians, the Upstalsboom Thingstätte. Then drive along the Ems-Jade Canal, which has connected the three cities of Emden, Aurich and Wilhelmshaven since 1888, to Emden. The seaport city is the largest city in East Frisia. The old inland port with its museum ships stretches right into the city center. In addition to the Kunsthalle and the Ostfriesisches Landesmuseum, fans of Germany's most famous comedian Otto Waalkes should visit Dat Otto Huus.

Day 4: Emden – Norden, approx. 60 km

On this day of your cycling vacation in East Frisia, the North Sea Coast Cycle Route takes you via Rysum, whose church is home to the oldest playable organ in Europe, dating back to 1457. The route takes you past the yellow-red painted lighthouse of Pilsum to Greetsiel. The over 600-year-old cutter harbor is the largest shrimp cutter harbor in the Weser-Ems region. It goes without saying that you should buy a fresh crab roll to fortify you for the next few kilometers. The National Park House provides information about the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. Your destination is Norden, one of the oldest towns in East Frisia and an officially recognized North Sea resort.

Day 5: Excursion to the island of Norderney

Biking is particularly beautiful on the island of Norderney, where cars are banned! You take the ferry across to the dune island, which has grown over time from sand washed up by the ocean currents. The crossing (not included in the tour price) takes about an hour from Norddeich. Go on a discovery tour along the salt marshes of the Wadden Sea and through the beautiful dune landscape. If you don't want to go to Norderney, you can spend your day at the seal station or cycle along the coast and the Wadden Sea National Park. If you still have time, visit the East Frisian Tea Museum in Norden, which is housed in the Old Town Hall.

Day 6: Norden – Wittmund / Jever, approx. 50 – 60 km

You follow the coastline and soon reach the Norderburg Dornum, the most beautiful moated castle in East Frisia. Then follow the cycle path through wide marshland landscapes to Esens, which calls itself the East Frisian chieftain's town or bear town. From the 54-metre-high tower of St. Magnus Church, you have a fabulous view of the offshore islands of Borkum, Memmert and Juist in good weather. The destination of this cycling day is the small town of Wittmund, the town with the red bricks in the heart of East Frisia. Here you will also find the oldest fully preserved gallery Dutch mill in Germany

Day 7: Wittmund – Dangast, approx. 40 – 50 km

On the penultimate day of your cycling vacation in East Frisia, get back on your bike after breakfast and cycle to Jever. Everyone is probably familiar with the beer brand that has been brewed here since 1848. During a walk through the town, the castle with its massive keep and 61-metre-high owl tower can be seen from afar. The journey continues to Wilhelmshaven. Founded by King Wilhelm I in 1869, the city is now Germany's largest military and naval base. Stroll along the promenade on the south beach or visit the very informative German Naval Museum. The stage ends in the North Sea resort of Dangast on the south-western Jade Bay.

Day 8: Dangast – Oldenburg, approx. 50 km and individual departure

You turn your back on the North Sea and cycle south back to Oldenburg. Before doing so, you should take time to visit Jaderberg Zoo, where you can see over 600 exotic animals from all over the world. Back in Oldenburg, your cycle tour through East Frisia comes to an end after eight days. However, we are also happy to extend your stay in Oldenburg.
