The Rhine has a long journey behind itself before it flows into the North Sea. You accompany the Rhine on this cycling tour in Holland for these last few kilometers from Arnhem to Rotterdam and can also follow it to the coast.
The Dutch are avowed cycling enthusiasts, so it is not surprising that the easy route is well signposted and will give you pure cycling pleasure. You will be enchanted by nature as you cycle along the polders, dykes and canals of the Rhine delta. De Biesbosch National Park is also a paradise on earth, and not just for the wildlife that lives there. A stroll through Dordrecht, Holland's oldest city with its historic inland harbours dating back to the 13th century, is a delight. Other historic towns such as Oosterbeek, Wijk bij Duustede, Buren and Gorinchem are in no way inferior. Well-preserved or restored moated castles with a rich history and finally the 19 windmills of Kinderdijk ensure that you will never get bored on your cycling tour in Holland. Rotterdam is the cherry on top and a real contrast with its skyscrapers and bustling port.
The cycling tour in Holland starts in Arnhem. As the capital of the province of Gelderland, Arnhem has a rich and eventful history. On one side, the city borders on the Veluwe, the largest forest area in the Netherlands, and on the other side there are extensive floodplains. If you arrive early, you should plan a visit to Burgers' Zoo. It shows the animals in their natural habitat instead of in cages.
On the saddle, into the fun. You cycle through the wooded Veluwe region on a varied tour. Mixed pine forests with dunes, small lakes and heathland are typical of the area. You follow the Lower Rhine to the 17th century Amerongen moated castle, which boasts a beautiful garden and a unique collection of original 19th century pieces. Your destination is the pretty village of Wijk bij Duurstede, which was built on the site of the important trading town of Dorestad.
Today you cross the Lower Rhine on your cycling tour in Holland and head towards the famous Dutch fruit region of Betuwe. Via the historic town of Buren and the Linge river, you will soon reach the town of Leerdam, which is located on the beautiful river surrounded by dykes. It not only gives its name to the Leerdam cheese variety, but is also known for its glass industry. The shorter option takes you along the Linge river to your stage destination of Gorinchem. The longer option takes you via Vuren past Loevestein Castle and Woudrichem to the fortified town of Gorinchem.
Take a closer look at the old fortified town of Gorinchem in the morning. A ferry (not included in the price) takes you to Werkenam. You then cycle through De Biesbosch National Park, one of the few freshwater tidal areas in the world. This is where the Meuse and Waal rivers meet. You cross over to Kop van't Land by ferry (not included) and soon reach Dordrecht, the oldest city in Holland. The atmosphere in the port city is unique. One more trip on the water and you have reached Papendrecht.
The cycling tour in Holland now offers a special photo opportunity! The first highlight of the day is the 19 windmills of Kinderkijk. Dating back to the 18th century, the mills are still well preserved and have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can now decide whether to cycle directly to Rotterdam via Slikkerveer on the ferry (not included) or to stay in the saddle a little longer to see where the Rhine flows into the North Sea in Hoek van Holland. The stage is then extended by around 30 km. Take a walk along the huge sandy beach and take the train (not included) back to Rotterdam.
