Our bike tour on the caminho portugues takes you to the Atlantic coasts of Portugal and Spain. This tour follows a variant of the Caminho Português, the classic Portuguese Way of St. James, which actually originated in Lisbon. You mainly follow beautiful coastal landscapes, pass sandy beaches and estuaries and get to know traditional fishing villages and picturesque harbor towns. Every day on our bike tour on the caminho portugues, you will enjoy a wide variety of seafood and fish specialties as well as excellent northern Portuguese and Galician wines. They pamper your palate and, in combination with the warm hospitality and relaxed atmosphere, create the perfect cycling vacation feeling. Our bike tour on the caminho portugues starts in the port city of Porto and takes you to the heart of one of the holy cities of Christianity, the world-famous Santiago de Compostela, at an average of 40 kilometers per stage.
Your bike tour on the caminho portugues begins in Porto. First, a transfer (included) takes you from the airport to your hotel. After checking in, it is worth taking a long walk through the old town with its many magnificent churches, baroque buildings and modern museums. The colorful and Mediterranean flair of the city on the Douro will inspire you just as much as a visit to one of the many port wine cellars and the variety of Portuguese culinary delicacies.
You will complete the first section of today's stage of your bike tour on the caminho portugues with a transfer (included), which will take you to Esposende. Let's go! A first stopover is in Viana do Castelo. Visit the Praça da República, one of the most beautiful medieval squares in Portugal, and enjoy an outstanding view of the city and the River Lima from the pilgrimage church on Monte Santa Luzia. We continue along the Atlantic coast to Caminha. The town is surrounded by a mighty city wall, behind which you will discover small, picturesque alleyways.
You are spoilt for choice right at the start of your cycling day today: you can cross the Rio Minho by ferry (not included) or cycle over the Ponte da Amizade bridge in Vila Nova de Cerveira to the other bank of the river. In both cases, you cross the border to Spain almost unnoticed. You continue cycling along the Atlantic coast to your destination for the day, the port city of Baiona. After a stroll through the town, try some freshly caught seafood, sit back with a glass of wine and enjoy the view of the sea as the sun sets.
Today's cycling day of your bike tour on the caminho portugues takes you along the Atlantic coast of Galicia. Along the way, enjoy the view over the sea and the fresh sea breeze blowing in your face. Along the way, oyster lovers will get their money's worth in the fishing village of Arcade. Your destination for the day, Pontevedra, is a town steeped in history with a long seafaring and trading tradition. Take a tour of the town with its numerous squares, churches and museums – well worth a visit!
Relaxed, you cycle towards the Atlantic, passing through the vineyards of the Rías Baixas. The wine region is known for Albariño, one of Portugal's most important white wine varieties. In your destination for the day, Cambados, wine-growing and fishing are omnipresent. Take a stroll along the Praza de Fefiñans, visit the fishing district of San Tomé and enjoy the sparkling fresh wine of Galicia on a guided tour of a traditional winery, including a wine tasting (included).
Your bike tour on the caminho portugues takes you to the wide estuary of the Ría de Arousa, a bay. Cross a bridge to reach the small island of A Illa de Arousa. Enjoy sunbathing on the miles of sandy beaches or treat yourself to a refreshing dip in the sea. From the Con do Forno viewpoint, you can enjoy a beautiful view over the island. Back on the mainland, head to Carril. The fishing village is famous for its mussels, which are farmed on wooden platforms off the coast – try them!
Today you cycle inland through forests and wetlands and first reach Padrón. Legend has it that the ship carrying the body of the apostle James, who was later buried in Santiago de Compostela, docked in this small town. Over the centuries, Santiago de Compostela has developed into one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the world. The cathedral, which was built in the 11th century as the burial church of St. James, is particularly impressive. Treat yourself to typical Spanish empanadas and a Galician wine on the last evening of your bike tour on the caminho portugues – Perfecto!
