Day 1: Individual arrival in Würzburg
Your active bike tour from Würzburg to Passau begins on the Main river. We recommend an early arrival, because the venerable residence city has a lot to offer. Visit the Marienberg Fortress, stroll through the Residenz Court Garden and across the Old Main Bridge. The vineyards surrounding the city produce excellent wines that already made Johann Wolfgang von Goethe rave. Treat yourself to a delicious glass of wine to round off the day.
Day 2: Würzburg – Marktheidenfeld, approx. 80 km
On the first stage of your bike tour from Würzburg to Passau, you will be cycling along the Main River. On the way, you can make stops at the magnificent Veitshöchheim Castle and in Gemünden, the gateway to the Spessart. Or how about a tour of the half-timbered town of Lohr, where, according to legend, the model for the fairytale Snow White once lived? Swap your bike for a walk in Marktheidenfeld, your destination for the day, because the small, lively town awaits you with an old town worth seeing.
Day 3: Marktheidenfeld – Weikersheim, approx. 85 km
Today you leave the Main and Lower Franconia and follow the Tauber river. Lined by forests, meadows and vineyards, you cycle through the Tauber valley. You pass through idyllic wine villages and reach picturesque Tauberbischofsheim. Particularly worth seeing are the Kurmainzische Castle and the old town, which is adorned with Franconian half-timbered houses. Via Bad Mergentheim you reach Weikersheim. The town not only offers you one of the most important Renaissance castles in Germany, but is also known for its full-bodied wines such as Tauberschwarz, an old red wine variety.
Day 4: Weikersheim – Ansbach, approx. 75 km
Your active bike tour from Würzburg to Passau takes you through the Tauber Valley, first to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Experience a medieval town ensemble that is unparalleled anywhere in Germany. Narrow cobbled streets, lovingly decorated half-timbered houses and stately towers give Rothenburg a very special charm. Back on the saddle, you leave the Tauber Valley and cycle towards your destination for the day, Ansbach in the heart of Middle Franconia. Surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful forests, Ansbach not only offers something for the eye, but also for the stomach. Try the Ansbach bratwurst, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages.
Day 5: Ansbach – Lake Brombach – Wettelsheim/ Treuchtlingen, approx. 60 km
From Ansbach you cycle along the Altmühl cycle path. On the way, you will make a detour to Lake Brombach. It is the largest reservoir in the Franconian Lake District. Equally appreciated by water sports enthusiasts and bathers, it is ideal for a longer break. Refreshed, you cycle to your destination of the day, Wettelsheim, in the Altmühltal Nature Park. If you still have enough energy after this long stage, visit the Upper Fortress above the town in neighbouring Treuchtlingen. The castle ruins are freely accessible and offer a beautiful view over the town.
Day 6: Wettelsheim – Kinding-Enkering, approx. 80 km
Your bike tour from Würzburg to Passau takes you along the Altmühl cycle path via Pappenheim, famous for its castle, first to Solnhofen. Numerous fossils have been found in the slab limestone quarried around the town, including the world-famous archaeopteryx, a prehistoric bird. On we go! Passing the impressive rock formation of the Twelve Apostles, you reach Eichstätt. The baroque town is dominated by the mighty Willibaldsburg Castle and impresses with its Residence Square, one of the most beautiful in Europe. Through the widened Altmühl valley and accompanied by juniper heaths you reach Kinding-Enkering.
Day 7: Kinding-Enkering – Kelheim, approx. 60 km + boat trip
Today's leg of your bike tour from Würzburg to Passau is packed with sights and experiences. Marvel at the imposing castle complex of Hirschberg Castle in Beilngries and visit the sublime Prunn Castle near Riedenburg, one of the most beautiful castles in the Altmühl Valley. You continue to follow the Altmühl, which leads you swiftly to Kelheim. With the Kelheim Liberation Hall in view, you have almost reached your destination for the day. On a boat trip to Weltenburg you can sit back and relax! The monastery there is home to the oldest monastery brewery. Treat yourself to a freshly tapped beer in the wonderful beer garden before returning to Kelheim by boat.
Day 8: Kelheim – Regensburg, approx. 50 / 40 km
On the shortest stage of your cycle tour, you now follow the Danube. You will cycle quickly and stress-free through Regensburg. The city looks back on a long history. The Romans used the town at the northernmost point of the Danube as a camp for their troops. The Porta Praetoria in the medieval city centre, which is well worth seeing, is evidence of this time. It is also worth visiting the imposing St. Peter's Cathedral. From the Stone Bridge you have a wonderful view of the old town. Get in the mood for the coming stage with an evening beer.
Day 9: Regensburg – Deggendorf, approx. 90 km
You have barely left Regensburg behind when the next highlight awaits you. In Donaustauf, a visit to the impressive Walhalla is a must. Enjoy the view of the Danube and the surrounding region. The climb is worth it! Back on the bike, you follow the Danube and imperceptibly reach Lower Bavaria. You can take a break in Straubing. Marvel at the Straubing Roman treasure in the Gäuboden Museum. With the Bavarian Forest on your left and the Gäuboden on your right, you reach Deggendorf.
Day 10: Deggendorf – Passau, approx. 55 km
The last stage of your active bike tour from Würzburg to Passau takes you to the three-river city of Passau. On the way, a stop in Niederalteich is a good idea.
