Cycle tour on the Romantic Road

Day 1: Individual arrival in Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is regarded as the ideal German old town even worldwide. Wander through the cobbled streets and enjoy the unique atmosphere on the town hall square. The whole town exudes something magical and mystical. No wonder Walt Disney used Rothenburg as a model for the town in the Pinocchio movie. Even scenes for the Harry Potter franchise were filmed there.

Day 2: Rothenburg ob der Tauber – Dinkelsbühl, approx. 60 km

Dinkelsbühl exists precisely because of the Romantic Road. Its location near the most important trade routes and good defensive position led to the town being built in the Middle Ages. To this day, the town center is well preserved and takes you on a journey through time. Numerous buildings tell their history, from the Münster St. Georg to the old town hall and the Rothenburg Gate.

Day 3: Dinkelsbühl – Nördlingen, approx. 40 km

The Nördlinger Ries was formed by a meteorite impact over 15 million years ago. People began to settle here early on. The town of Nördlingen is located in the middle of the crater, which is still recognizable today. A museum explains all aspects of this history, including why the crew of the space mission Apollo 14 trained in Nördlingen.

Day 4: Nördlingen – Donauwörth, approx. 40 km

Today's stage first takes you to Harburg. The impressive castle of the same name towers above the town. A visit is recommended, as you can look out over the entire valley from the walls of Harburg Castle. Continuing along the Romantic Road, you come to Donauwörth. This is where the Wörnitz flows into the Danube. A visit to Käthe-Kruse-Puppen-Museum (a museum dedicated to dolls) is a very special experience.

Day 5: Donauwörth – Augsburg, approx. 50 km

On your way to Augsburg, you will pass Via Claudia Augusta, which crosses the Alps all the way to Italy. The university city of Augsburg is the third largest city in Bavaria and has a lot to offer. From culinary delights to shopping, all your needs are catered for here. Culture enthusiasts can take a look at the birthplace of Berthold Brecht or visit the Schaezlerpalais. The Augsburg Zoo is also very popular.

Day 6: Augsburg – Landsberg am Lech, approx. 50 km

Today's stage takes you first to Königsbrunn. Don't miss a visit to the Mercateum, the largest walk-in globe in the world! Back on the Romatic Road, you cycle comfortably towards your destination for today: Landsberg am Lech. Located right on the border between Swabia and Bavaria, both cultures have mixed here. Try a Landsberg beer or one of the numerous chocolate creations.

Day 7: Landsberg am Lech – Schongau, approx. 35 km

You cycle through the so-called Pfaffenwinkel on this stage. It was named after the unusual density of monasteries and churches in this area. Thanks to its height, you can see the church tower of Denklingen well in advance. Your destination for the day is the town of Schongau. With its well-preserved town wall, Schongau invites you to explore the old town.

Day 8: Schongau – Schwangau / Füssen, approx. 50 km

A special treat awaits you on your last cycling stage on the Romantic Road: a visit to Neuschwanstein Castle. The most famous of German castles awaits you just before Füssen. The throne room, singers' hall and royal apartment will transport you directly to the royal court. Hohes Schloss Castle in Füssen is a rival, much older but just as beautifully preserved.
