The Lahn meanders through the heart of Hesse for almost 245 kilometers. Dense forests, green floodplains, countless castles and palaces, half-timbered romanticism – our bike tour along the Lahn offers you a wealth of sights worth seeing and discovering. That doesn‘t sound sporty enough for you? On the bike tour on the Lahn you cycle an average of 60 kilometers a day, just like the motto: More kilometers, more cycling fun! Along the way, you‘ll pass through the university town of Marburg, examine the fairytale castle of Braunfels, the unfinished cathedral of Wetzlar and the beautiful old town of Limburg. At the confluence of the Lahn and Rhine, in Lahnstein, your bike tour ends at the Lahn. Almost! Your destination Coblenz, not far from the mouth of the Lahn, is the crowning finale of this bike tour, which manages without any notable climbs.
Your bike tour along the Lahn begins not far from the Lahntopfer in the Rothaar mountains, just under 600 meters above sea level. Upon arrival at the hotel, grab your bike and explore the wooded surroundings before heading to Marburg the next day.
About Bad Laasphe on the Rothaarsteig and the half-timbered town of Biedenkopf your first stage leads you to the lively university town of Marburg. Crisscross the narrow streets of the old town up to the Landgrave's castle. If the climb seems too arduous, use one of the Oberstadt elevators or the Marburg Castle Railway, which will take you comfortably past all the sights of the city.
Along wide Lahnauen you cycle today on the bike tour along the Lahn through the time-honored cities of Gießen and Wetzlar. Gießen, known for the oldest botanical garden in Germany and Wetzlar, whose unfinished-looking cathedral reflects several centuries of architectural history. Before reaching your stage destination of Braunfels, make a detour to the Fortuna mine near Solms. In the visitor mine, learn interesting facts about iron ore mining in the region along the Lahn River, which was shaped until the 20th century.
After taking a last look at the fairy-tale Braunfels Castle today, you will continue along the Lahn Valley Cycle Path to the residential town of Weilburg. Take a breather while visiting the baroque castle complex, the largest in Hesse. In Runkel, you have the choice of climbing to the castles of Runkel and Schadeck. The former can still be visited from the inside today. Having arrived at your stage destination Limburg, visit the world-famous cathedral or take a pedal boat trip on the Lahn. For refreshment, we recommend the traditional Limburg dish Limburger Säcker.
Following the loops and meanders of the Lahn, you will cycle today through the well-known spa town of Bad Ems with its numerous thermal springs. Before you reach your destination Koblenz, take a look at the confluence of the Lahn and Rhine in Lahnstein. Ideally from the Lahneck Castle. In Coblenz, the German Corner awaits you. Below the Kaiser Wilhelm Monument, at the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine, there is a magnificent view of the city and Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.
