With the Baltic Sea in view most of the time, this bike tour from Kiel to Odense takes you along the east coast of Schleswig-Holstein to the heart of the Danish island of Funen. Another highlight of the bike tour from Kiel to Odense takes you to Flensburg. Thanks to its Scandinavian flair, the city on the fjord offers a glimpse of the days ahead. You cycle imperceptibly across the German-Danish border and soon reach the Island of Als, Denmark's eighth largest Baltic Sea island. The ferry takes you to Funen. Put your feet up and enjoy the view of the Alsenbelt before you reach the Garden of Denmark. Lush nature, countless castles and manor houses underline the relaxed character of the island. The destination of your bike tour from Kiel is also relaxed and green. In Odense, beautiful gardens and parks await you, as well as many fairy tales.
Welcome to your bike tour from Kiel! Before you set off from the capital of Schleswig-Holstein to Odense, it's time to unwind. Get in the mood for the coming days with a walk along the Kiellinie with its small and large ships and sunbathing on Falckenstein beach.
It's time to go! With the Kiel Fjord in view, you first cycle north. After crossing the Kiel Canal, it is worth making a detour to Leuchtturm Bülk. The lighthouse striped in white and green is the oldest on the Kiel Fjord. Another stop is at the steep coast in Stohl, a good opportunity to leave your bike for a short walk. Continue to your first stage destination Eckernförde. The mile-long sandy beach to the south of the harbour is the ideal place to relax and look back on today.
The second stage of your bike tour from Kiel to Odense takes you to the Schlei today. You cycle along the Eckernförde Bay and across the tranquil Schwansen peninsula to Kappeln. The history of the town on the Schlei dates back to the 14th century. Visit the museum harbour and the town's landmark, the Dutch mill Amanda. At 32 meters, it is the tallest windmill in Schleswig-Holstein. Right next to it is a sawmill that gives visitors an insight into old wood processing techniques.
Flensburg, Germany's northernmost port city, is your destination today. Not far from the Baltic Sea, you first cycle through gently rolling countryside to Glücksburg. The Renaissance castle there is considered the cradle of European royalty. Situated in the middle of a pond, it is open to visitors and takes them on a journey through more than 400 years of history of one of the most important castles in Northern Europe. Back on your bike, it's not far to Flensburg. If you prefer to cover the last few kilometers by boat, you can do so from Glücksburg.
Before you set off on today's stage of your bike tour from Kiel to Odense, take a walk through Flensburg. The city, which was first mentioned in documents over 750 years ago, looks back on an eventful past. Part of this is the former trade in rum, which led to considerable prosperity. You can find out more about this at the Rum Museum. Cycle a few kilometers north across the German-Danish border. Along the Flensburg Fjord you reach Sønderborg on the Als Sound. Visit the castle there, which now serves as a museum
From Sønderborg, you cycle across the Island of Als, which is characterized by cliffs, bays and unspoilt beaches. In Fynhav, you board the ferry that takes you to Bøjden on the Island of Funen. Visit the Horne Kirke in Horne on the way to Fåborg. The round church is one of the most unusual places of worship in Denmark. The landmark of your overnight stay in Fåborg is the bell tower. It is a remnant of a long demolished church. From the top of the tower, you can enjoy wonderful views of the town and the sea.
The last stage of your bike tour from Kiel takes you to your destination of Odense. Denmark's third largest city has a fairytale feel to it. Hans Christian Andersen was born here and is still remembered in many places today. Immerse yourself in the fantastic world of the famous writer at the H.C. Andersen Hus. Did you know that Andersen also used scissors to pass on his fairy tales without words, only using paper cuttings? To round off the trip, take a different kind of city tour, a boat trip on Odense Å.
