Are you looking for a sporty idea for a long weekend or a short holiday in the north of Germany? Our suggestion: a bike tour along the Kiel Canal! Inaugurated in 1895, the canal is one of the busiest waterways in the world. It connects Brunsbüttel on the Elbe with Kiel on the Baltic Sea over a distance of around one hundred kilometres. Our bike tour along the Kiel Canal starts in Hamburg. Accompanied by the Elbe, you will travel via the matjee town of Glückstadt to Brunsbüttel. Marvel at the Kiel Canal locks there and learn more about the history and function of the canal in the adjacent lock museum. The longest section of our bike tour along the Kiel Canal takes you to Kiel. Lined by changing landscapes, populated with high bridges and ferry piers as well as container and cruise ships gliding across the canal, you will be travelling almost without climbing and mostly not far from the canal bank. In Kiel, enjoy the maritime flair on the harbour promenade and on the beaches along the Kiel Fjord and look back on a brisk and eventful short trip.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Hamburg

Start your bike tour along the Kiel Canal in Hamburg in a relaxed way. Germany's second largest city has a lot to offer! Whether the fish market, the Speicherstadt, the Elbe Philharmonic Hall or the famous Michel – the multifaceted Hanseatic city impresses with a mixture of historic and modern buildings, but also knows how to inspire with its maritime charm and multifaceted liveliness. Get in the mood for the next two days of cycling, which will take you from the Elbe to the Baltic Sea, with a walk along the Inner and Outer Alster or on a harbour tour.

Day 2: Hamburg – Brunsbüttel, approx. 80 km

Today you will set off on the first stage of your bike tour along the Kiel Canal. Along the Elbe, you will pass the ship welcoming facility in Wedel. Ocean liners and cruise ships arriving at or departing from the Port of Hamburg are greeted or bade farewell with the respective national flag. Cycle leisurely to Glückstadt, which was designed and founded on the drawing board almost 400 years ago. Strengthen yourself with a meal of the nationally renowned Maties before cycling relaxed to your destination for the day. The Kiel Canal begins in Brunsbüttel. Experience the impressive canal locks that enable small and large ships to take a shorter route to the Baltic Sea.

Day 3: Brunsbüttel – Kiel, approx. 105 km

Today you will experience the full length of the waterway built at the end of the 19th century on your bike tour along the Kiel Canal. You cycle briskly along or near the canal. You will pass high bridges and ferry piers, and time and again you will see huge container ships and ocean-going cruise liners – impressive! A longer break is worthwhile in Rendsburg. Not only the railway bridge is worth seeing, but also the old town of Rendsburg. Follow the blue line, a path marked with a blue line that leads you to the city's sights. Kiel is the capital of Schleswig-Holstein. Take a sunbath on one of the beaches along the Kiel Fjord or take an evening stroll along the Kiellinie promenade.
