Welcome to Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein! The bike tour from Hamburg to Kiel takes you from the Elbe to the Baltic Sea – virtually right across Germany's northernmost federal state. After getting to know Hamburg's Speicherstadt warehouse district and Michel and enjoying your first fish sandwich, you follow the Elbe towards the North Sea. Via the matjes town of Glückstadt, you reach Brunsbüttel and thus the Kiel Canal. With a length of around 100 kilometers, it is an important part of the European transport network and of great significance for regional and international shipping. After a detour to Dithmarschen, you cycle along the NOK (Nord-Ostsee Kanal – Kiel Canal) route to Rendsburg, famous for its canal-spanning high bridge. Continue to Kiel, the destination of the bike tour on the NOK route. Enjoy the maritime flair along the harbour promenade and on the beaches of the Kiel Fjord. An ideal way to look back on an eventful bike tour.
Your bike tour starts on the NOK (Nord-Ostsee Kanal – Kiel Canal) route in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. Germany's second largest city impresses with a wealth of things to see and do. After checking into your hotel, grab your bike and visit the St. Pauli Piers, Michel and Speicherstadt. Or how about a harbour tour? From the water, you can easily enjoy the heart of Hamburg from a different perspective.
Along the Elbe, the first stage of your bike tour from Hamburg to Kiel takes you past the ship greeting facility Willkomm-Höft in Wedel. Depending on the size of the ships arriving or departing the port of Hamburg, they are greeted with their national anthem and flag. The tour continues at a leisurely pace to Glückstadt. Founded in the 17th century according to plans, the town is famous for its Glückstädter Matjes. It is made by hand in the old tradition – a real delicacy!
You follow the North Sea Cycle Route towards Brunsbüttel. This is where the 100-kilometre-long Kiel Canal begins. It is worth taking a longer break to visit the canal locks and the associated museum – not only technology enthusiasts will be impressed. The route continues to Dithmarschen, a landscape characterized by the slightly hilly Geest and the flat marshes. You will spend the night in St. Michaelisdonn, known for its Dutch mill Edda , or in Schafstedt, situated on the Kiel Canal.
Today you are on your way along the Kiel Canal. Side by side with cruise ships, container ships and freighters, you cycle along the canal at a relaxed pace. Inaugurated in 1895, it is one of the busiest artificial waterways in the world. Passing high bridges and ferry docks, you reach Rendsburg. To get to know the city better, we recommend a walk along the blue line – that way you won't miss a single sight. The Rendsburg High Bridge, the city's landmark, is also worth a visit.
The last stage of your bike tour on the NOK route takes you to Kiel. Get to know the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein on a walk. Watch the ships in the harbour and at the piers Norwegerkai and Schwedenkai from Hörnbrücke, a folding bridge, visit the Maritime Museum and relax in the Ratsdienergarten. If you would like to spend some more time on the Baltic Sea, grab your bike. It is only a few kilometers from Kiel city center to Falckensteiner Strand.
