Day 1: Individual arrival in Eichstätt
In the midst of the Altmühltal Nature Park, the bishop's town of Eichstätt welcomes you to your bike tour from Eichstätt to Passau. On your first tour through the baroque old town, you will discover numerous beautiful corners and squares. The Eichstätt Cathedral is one of the most important architectural monuments in Bavaria. Stroll across the Residenzplatz past the former seat of the prince bishops and enjoy the first evening of your bike tour in one of the many restaurants.
Day 2: Eichstätt – Beilngries, approx. 45 km
Before you leave Eichstätt, you should pay a visit to Willibaldsburg Castle. In addition to the Jura Museum, it also houses the Museum of Prehistory and Early History – a real experience for young and old! Cycle leisurely through the juniper heath through the Altmühl valley. Even from a distance you will recognise the imposing castle of the same name near Kipfenberg. Don't forget to take a souvenir photo before you continue cycling towards your first stage destination Beilngries. In addition to a walk through the historic old town with its medieval towers and baroque buildings, you can also take a detour under the earth's surface: A rock cellar labyrinth of a former brewery now houses the brewery museum.
Day 3: Beilngries – Kelheim, approx. 50 km
Today you let the Altmühl guide you for the last time. From Dietfurt it flows in the bed of the well-known Main-Danube Canal. In Riedenburg, amidst Jura rocks and deciduous forests, you will come across the so-called pearl of the Altmühl valley. There are several castles and castle ruins around Riedenburg, including Prunn Castle, one of the best-preserved knight's castles in Bavaria. In Kelheim, between the confluence of the Altmühl and the Danube, you pass the town's landmark, the Befreiungshalle (Liberation Hall) on the Michelsberg. The memorial was commissioned by King Ludwig I and stands for the victorious battles against Napoleon in the Wars of Liberation. It is not only the impressive exterior façade that will catch your eye. The interior with its 34 victory goddesses made of white Carrara marble will also impress you!
Day 4: Kelheim – Regensburg, approx. 40 km
Before you continue your bike tour from Eichstätt to Passau along the Danube, you should not miss a boat trip (not included) through the impressive Danube breakthrough to Weltenburg Monastery. This is home to the oldest monastery brewery in the world and a wonderful beer garden. Along the mighty loops of the Danube, you reach Regensburg, the northernmost point of the river, as your stage destination. Take a leisurely stroll through the city's medieval centre. A visit to the two landmarks, St. Peter's Cathedral and the Stone Bridge, is a must. In the evening, reward yourself with Bavarian delicacies and regional beer in one of the many traditional inns!
Day 5: Regensburg – Straubing, approx. 55 km
Shortly after Regensburg, an impressive building awaits you: the Valhalla near Donaustauf, built by King Ludwig I. With a little effort you climb the 358 steps. The climb is worth it: you have a fantastic panoramic view of the Danube and the surrounding region. In Wörth, another place with a great view of the Danube plain and the fertile land of the Gäuboden awaits you with the castle of the same name. With Straubing you have reached the heart of the Gaeuboden. Stroll through the colourful town square and admire the 68-metre high town tower with the second largest tower clock in Germany. During a visit to the Gaeuboden Museum you can marvel at the world-famous Straubing Roman treasure and unique pieces of jewellery and weapons from the Bavarians.
Day 6: Straubing – Deggendorf, approx. 40 km
On today's stage of your bike tour from Eichstätt to Passau, you will pass the Bogenberg, on which the pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary is enthroned. This is considered the oldest Marian pilgrimage church in Bavaria, which is why the Bogenberg is also called the Holy Mountain of Lower Bavaria. You cycle past the Benedictine Abbey of Metten, which impresses with its classical baroque elements. With Deggendorf you reach the gateway to the Bavarian Forest. There is plenty to explore on a tour of the Gothic and Baroque old town. For example, the popularly known Deggendorfer Knödel (Deggendorf Dumplings) at the Old Town Hall. These are two stone balls connected by chains and probably served as a medieval punishment instrument.
Day 7: Deggendorf – Passau, approx. 55 km
Today you get on your bike for the last time and continue to follow the Danube. From afar you will see Niederalteich, one of the oldest Benedictine monasteries in Bavaria. At the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers, you have reached the destination of your cycle tour in the three-river city of Passau. After your arrival, stroll through the narrow streets of Passau's old town and visit the world's largest cathedral organ in St. Stephan's Cathedral. Also recommended is a boat trip across the city's rivers. While your legs get a well-deserved rest, you can view the city's historic buildings from the comfort of the water.
Day 8: Individual departure or extension of stay
After the one-week bike tour from Eichstätt to Passau, it is now time to say goodbye. If you need more time in Passau, we will be happy to extend your stay with an extra night. You can also add extra nights anywhere during the tour and thus extend your holiday a little longer.
