Map for the Bike tour through the Danube valley

Day 1: Individual arrival in Donaueschingen

Welcome to the royal seat of Donaueschingen! Your bike tour through the Danube valley starts where the river begins its journey towards the Black Sea. Be sure to visit the heart of the town of Donaueschingen, the famous source of the Danube. It is located in the castle park between the town church and the Fürstenberg Castle. What gushes out of the ground here is rainwater from the Black Forest, which seeps into the earth, flows underground to the edge of the Black Forest and comes to light again in Donaueschingen as the source of the Danube.

Day 2: Donaueschingen – Tuttlingen, approx. 35 km

Throw a coin over your shoulder into the source of the Danube. According to legend, this will ensure that you will return to Donaueschingen. After that it's time to cycle. You start on the Danube Cycle Route in the direction of Immendingen. This stage is easy to cycle and a leisurely start to your bike tour through the Danube valley. Not far from Immendingen, the Danube sink awaits you. You continue cycling through a beautiful river landscape to Tuttlingen, your overnight stop.

Look forward to a natural spectacle today. You travel through the middle of the Danube breakthrough valley. The river meanders through mighty, steeply sloping massifs of rugged, white limestone cliffs. The magnificent Hohenzollern Castle, one of the largest city castles in Germany, awaits you in Sigmaringen. The castle complex dates back to the 11th century. During a visit, you will gain a comprehensive insight into the splendors of the castle, the Hohenzollern family history, the armory and the history of the building.

Day 4: Sigmaringen – Riedlingen, approx. 35 km

The Danube now flows through a flat, wide basin. The fortified, whitewashed castle, visible from afar, lies majestically on your way. The Danube makes a 180 degree turn in Scheer. Beautifully situated on the Danube, you will see Bartelstein Castle. Another highlight of this stage of your bike tour through the Danube valley are the hanging gardens of Neufra at the castle there. The cycle path runs parallel to the Danube to Riedlingen. In your overnight stay, you will be very impressed by the half-timbered houses that characterize the townscape.

Today it's worth making a detour to the former Benedictine abbey of Zwiefalten. The abbey is one of the most beautiful baroque complexes in Southern Germany. Its origins date back to the 11th century. In addition to the imposing exterior, the interior impresses with ceiling paintings and numerous decorative elements. Back on the Danube, you cycle on to Obermarchtal, which also has an impressive monastery complex. Before you reach your stage destination of Ehingen, you can take a coffee break in the half-timbered town of Munderkingen.

Behind the monastery is the famous Blautopf, a karst spring and the beginning of a large cave system. Medieval castles and ruins accompany you to the university town of Ulm. The Ulm Minster with the highest church tower in the world is particularly worth seeing.
