This leisurely bike tour along the Bavarian Danube takes you right across the Free State of Bavaria. Along the way, you’ll encounter historic yet very diverse towns and time and again immerse yourself in unspoiled nature. Ingolstadt lies along your route. This is where the Bavarian Beer Purity Law was proclaimed in 1516. Further east, you’ll visit the Danube Gorge near Weltenburg before reaching the Gothic city of Regensburg with its magnificent Old Town. As the crowning finale of your cycling tour along the Bavarian Danube, you’ll arrive in Passau. In the City of Three Rivers, the Inn, Ilz, and Danube rivers converge. Along the way, there’s still plenty of time to take in the beautiful panorama of the Bavarian countryside.
You’ll start your bike tour along the Bavarian Danube in picturesque Donauwörth. The most important trade route between Nuremberg and Augsburg once crossed the Danube in this small town. Today, magnificent townhouses serve as a reminder of the town’s former importance and wealth. You’ll spend the night in Donauwörth or in the Wörnitzstein district. Your reserved rental bikes will be waiting for you at the hotel.
The first leg of your cycling tour along the Bavarian Danube takes you through the foothills of the Franconian Alb. It’s worth stopping in Neuburg to explore its beautiful old town, the Hofkirche, and the impressive city palace. In Ingolstadt, you’ll be greeted by an astonishingly medieval atmosphere. The city is known worldwide as the home of the Audi automobile brand. At the Audi museum mobile, you can learn more about the company’s history and take a journey through time over the past few decades thanks to numerous exhibits.
The Danube Cycle Path takes you through Neustadt and past hop fields to Bad Gögging. This spa town is the perfect place to relax. Take a bath in natural mud or thermal water. Or how about a glass of sulfur water? In Abensberg, it’s worth climbing the Kuchlbauer Tower. It was designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser and stands on the grounds of a brewery. It can be toured as part of a guided tour. If you’re staying overnight in Kelheim, the Weltenburg–Kelheim boat tour through the Danube Gorge takes place today.
The journey begins along the Danube toward Weltenburg. The monastery there is home to the world’s oldest monastery brewery. From Weltenburg, you’ll board the ship bound for Kelheim. Shortly after setting out, you’ll pass through the Danube Gorge, where the river winds its way through steep rock faces. In Kelheim, the Hall of Liberation on Michelsberg is well worth a visit. Regensburg marks the northernmost point of the Danube. Take a stroll through the sprawling Old Town and enjoy a cold beer in one of the cozy beer gardens.
A good spot for your first break on today’s stage of your cycling tour along the Bavarian Danube is at the Walhalla near Donaustauf. King Ludwig I had this imposing memorial built in the 19th century. After enjoying the view of the Danube and the surrounding area, cycle on to the old ducal city of Straubing, which traces its roots back to Celtic and Roman times. Straubing’s landmark is the city tower, which stands nearly 70 meters tall.
First, cycle through the small town of Bogen. Visit the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary on the Bogenberg and enjoy the view of the Danube before continuing through Pfelling and Mariaposching to your destination for the day, Deggendorf. The city is known as the gateway to the Bavarian Forest. Treat yourself to some of Deggendorf’s famous dumplings for a snack and explore the old town around the town square and the Old Town Hall.
Today is the final stretch! Your destination, the City of Three Rivers Passau, offers the perfect conclusion to your cycling tour along the Bavarian Danube. It boasts a long history that is evident in many corners of the city. On a stroll through the city, you’ll enjoy Passau’s almost Mediterranean charm. Visit St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the Veste Oberhaus fortress overlooking the Danube.
