Experience one of the most beautiful sections of the French Atlantic coast on this varied biketour on the Vélodyssée. Starting in the historic harbour town of La Rochelle, you follow the well-signposted Atlantic cycling route through pine forests, along wide sandy beaches and past traditional oyster villages all the way to Royan.
Your biketour on the Vélodyssée continues along the Gironde estuary, passing small marinas and renowned vineyards before reaching the vibrant city of Bordeaux. A perfect combination of coastal landscapes, regional gastronomy and authentic French lifestyle.
The historic harbour town welcomes you with its iconic towers and charming old town arcades. Take time for a stroll along the Vieux Port and prepare for the days ahead along the Atlantic coast.
Your Biketour on the Vélodyssée begins right by the Atlantic Ocean. Leaving La Rochelle’s harbour behind, you follow a well-developed coastal cycle path to Châtelaillon-Plage. Sandy beaches and pine forests accompany you before the route turns inland along the Charente River. Soon you reach Rochefort, a former naval town rich in maritime history.
Today’s stage takes you through salt marshes and small canals. A stop in Marennes is perfect for tasting regional oysters. A special highlight is crossing the Charente on Rochefort’s historic Transporter Bridge to Échillais, before continuing towards Royan, famous for its Belle Époque villas and elegant seafront.
On your Biketour on the Vélodyssée, the scenery gradually changes as you follow quiet paths and secondary roads along the Gironde estuary. A highlight is picturesque Talmont-sur-Gironde, perched on a cliff above the river. Small harbours and wide panoramic views accompany you to Mortagne-sur-Gironde.
The route now follows the tranquil banks of the Gironde, dotted with charming marinas. Well-developed cycle paths lead you into the Gironde region. In Blaye, an impressive citadel overlooks the vast estuary and marks the end of today’s stage.
Another highlight of your Biketour on the Vélodyssée awaits: First, cross the Gironde estuary comfortably via a boat transfer from Blaye to Lamarque, a unique experience on the water. The route then winds through gentle vineyard hills and past prestigious châteaux in the Médoc region. Finally, you arrive in vibrant Bordeaux, where stunning architecture, the historic old town, and French flair await.
After breakfast, your trip on the Vélodyssée from La Rochelle to Bordeauxe ends and you start your individual journey back home. We are happy to extend your stay in Bordeaux with an extra night upon request.
