Travel report: Lake Constance Cycle Tour

From the word go, communication with the team at Radweg-Reisen was effortless – and mind you, this had been a last-minute decision to cycle around Lake Constance! They made it all happen seamlessly.
I picked up Otmn, my travel companion for the four days (which actually became four and a half, as I couldn’t bear to part with her at the end). In case it’s not clear, Otmn is my bike – named after the colorful season of Autumn, just spelt a little more snazzily.
And that backdrop isn’t bad either 😉 – that’s Stein am Rhein, a small Swiss town that feels like stepping straight into a medieval painting.

Isn’t she a beauty?
Almost every corner I turned, there was something that took my breath away. From simple things like a row of tall slender trees where it seemed like the ivy winding up their trunks were green fingers (yes, I’ve a wild imagination) to juicy apple orchards.
I may have snagged a few fallen apples for a snack later on. Please don't report me to the apple police 🫣

Each day began to blend into the next, and I loved the rhythm that formed: waking up to breakfast in one of the charming hotels chosen by Radweg-Reisen, setting off with Otmn along the lake, detouring through quaint lakeside towns, pausing for coffee, apple pie, and endless photos – and ending the day with dinner and a quiet stroll along a peaceful promenade.

My favourite part (although difficult to choose) was cycling into Lindau. Set on a small island connected to the mainland by a narrow bridge, Lindau is one of the most captivating towns on Lake Constance. The moment you step onto the island, you’re surrounded by a blend of Bavarian charm and Mediterranean flair – pastel-colored buildings, flower-filled balconies, and the scent of roasted chestnuts drifting through cobblestone streets in autumn.
The harbor is Lindau’s most iconic spot. Standing between two grand sentinels – the Bavarian Lion statue on one side and the lighthouse (Neuer Leuchtturm) on the other – you’re treated to one of the most breathtaking views on the entire lake. Climbing the lighthouse rewards you with an even more striking view of the harbor, the old town’s red roofs, and the shimmering expanse of the Bodensee. I was going to return to Lindau in a few days to run the 3 Lander Half Marathon and it got me excited to see the flags already set up.

Upon returning to Konstanz on the last day, I still felt the urge for one final ride with Otmn. So, after breakfast the next morning, we set off to Reichenau Island – a perfect farewell route. The narrow causeway connecting the island to the mainland was lined with trees on both sides, their autumn colours mirrored in the lake below. The water shimmered under shifting clouds while flocks of migratory birds rested in the shallows – a reminder that Reichenau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also a haven for wildlife.

In short, cycling around Lake Constance in autumn was a serene experience fewer tourists, vivid colors, and a sense of calm that summer can’t match. Each country offered a slightly different flavor – Germany’s medieval charm, Austria’s alpine vistas, and Switzerland’s quiet elegance – yet all were united by the lake’s timeless beauty.
Missing Otmn and hoping to be reunited with her on another trip with Radweg-Reisen 😊
