On this cycling holiday through Salzkammergut, you get to know one of Austria‘s most beautiful regions. Fran Josef I of Austria and his wife Sissi spent the hot summer months in the cooler resort of Salzkammergut. The lakes, Lake Wolfgang, Attersee and Mondsee, are just some of the many waterways you‘ll discover on your cycling holiday. Each lake is more beautiful than the next, and all of them share a wonderful mountain backdrop - you decide which spot is the best for a break and a refreshing swim. But it‘s not just the lakes, but also the picturesque villages and towns, full of history, that are great to visit too. Wander through the Mozart village of St. Gilgen. Enjoy the flair of the Imperial resort of Bad Ischl and be amazed at the internationally famous Weiße Rössl (the White Horse) at Wolfgangsee Lake. What would a bike tour through Salzkammergut be without culinary delicacies? Refuel after your day in the saddle with some local Saibling (fish) or delicious Guglhupf cake.

Bike tour through Salzkammergut

Day 1: Individual arrival at the Lake Wolfgang

If you still have some time after your arrival at Lake Wolfgang, it is worth taking a walk along the lakeshore. Enjoy the idyllic landscape, the clear water reflecting the mountains and the beautiful view of snow-capped peaks. Look forward to your bike tour through Salzkammergut and round off the first evening in the hotel in comfort.

Day 2: Wolfgangsee – Mondsee, approx. 15 – 35 km

You cycle the first few kilometers of your Bike tour through Salzkammergut to the Mozart village of St. Gilgen, which is closely associated with the family of the famous composer. However, the artist himself was never here. Leave Lake Wolfgang, past the romantic Lake Krotten, until you reach the southern shore of Lake Mondsee. In the village of the same name, you have the opportunity to visit the collegiate church and the castle.

Day 3: Mondsee – Attersee – Traunsee, approx. 65 – 75 km

Always along the shores of Lake Mondsee, your bike tour through the Salzkammergut takes you to Lake Attersee. How about a break and a dip in the clear waters of Austria's largest lake? Refreshed, you cycle to the northern shore and on through the wooded Aurachtal valley to Lake Traunsee. Schloss Ort in Gmunden is famous as a film set from the TV series Schlosshotel Orth and is certainly worth a visit. Enjoy the "summer retreat" as the Romans did.

Day 4: Traunsee – Bad Aussee, approx. 20 – 30 km + train ride

From lake Ebensee, you cycle on flat paths along the River Traun to Bad Ischl. After a short tour of the historic town, you take the train to the "inner" Salzkammergut to Bad Aussee. Here you can decide whether you want to take a short cycle tour to Lake Altaussee or hike around the lake amidst the impressive mountain scenery.

Day 5: Excursion to the Ausseer Land, approx. 35 km

On your bike tour through Salzkammergut today, you will cycle to lake Grundlsee, which the locals affectionately call the "Styrian Sea" and then to lake Toplitzsee. Both lakes have one thing in common: the fantastic mountain scenery and crystal-clear water. Take a round trip on a romantic boat before cycling back to Bad Aussee and spending another night there.

Day 6: Bad Aussee – Hallstätter See – Bad Ischl, approx. 40 km

Let's go to the most beautiful lakeside town in the world, as Hallstatt was called by Alexander von Humboldt. Hallstatt is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but also a popular vacation destination for guests from all over the world. If you are not afraid of heights, it is worth making your way up to the 360-metre-high viewing platform to experience the breathtaking view from above. In Bad Ischl, you should not miss out on a guided tour of the imperial villa. Afterwards, treat yourself to an excellent Guglhupf at Café Zauner, just like Emperor Franz Joseph I and his Sissi did.

Day 7: Bad Ischl – Wolfgangsee, approx. 15 – 25 km

You cycle back to Lake Wolfgang along the Ischler Ache. Make the most of the remaining time and take the steepest steam cog railway in Austria up the 1783-metre-high Schafberg. On a clear day, you will have an incomparable panoramic view of the glistening lakes of the Salzkammergut and can retrace your bike tour through the Salzkammergut from above.
