Your cycle tour on Usedom and the Szczecin Lagoon begins in Greifswald. The townscape of the Hanseatic and university town remained virtually undamaged during the Second World War and can still be experienced today in much the same way as Caspar David Friedrich, the town's most famous son, once captured it in his paintings. One of his most famous motifs is the ruins of Eldena Abbey in the eastern part of the city. The heart of Greifswald is the Old Town, which is well worth seeing and impresses with its spacious market square and houses of different architectural styles.
The first stage of your cycle tour on Usedom and the Szczecin Lagoon takes you to Lubmin, not far from the Greifswald Bodden. The Baltic seaside resort's sandy beach, which is around five kilometers long, is perfect for taking a longer break. You reach your destination for the day, Wolgast. The town is often referred to as the gateway to the island of Usedom. Situated on the Peene River, it has an old town that is well worth seeing and boasts many architectural monuments. Take a harbor tour and pass the city's Blue Wonder. The Peene Bridge - a bascule bridge - was given its nickname due to its striking blue color. The bridge connects Wolgast with Usedom via the castle island.
Cross the Peene Bridge to the island of Usedom. Germany's second largest island is best known for its miles of fine sandy beaches and its imperial spas. One of these is Heringsdorf. The sophisticated seaside resort boasts a 508-metre-long pier, the longest on the European mainland. The beach villas in the style of spa architecture are reminiscent of the imperial era, when many celebrities came here for a summer retreat. The estate village of Mellenthin is located slightly off the coast. The romantic moated castle from the 16th century is particularly worth seeing. You will spend the night in Heringsdorf or Mellenthin.
Today your cycle tour takes you to Usedom on the Szczecin Lagoon. After leaving the Baltic Sea behind you, you cycle inland through small villages and wooded areas to the small town of Usedom. It gave the island its name. Take a walk to discover the Anklamer Tor with its Heimatstube and pay a visit to the harbor on Lake Usedom. Take the ferry across to the mainland in Karnin. You cycle not far from the Szczecin Lagoon to Ueckermünde, which awaits you with an old town worth seeing and a fine sandy beach.
The cycle path takes you through the Szczecin Lagoon Nature Park to Anklam on the Peene. The most famous son of the old port and Hanseatic city is Otto Lilienthal. He was the first person to successfully fly a glider. In the Otto Lilienthal Museum named after him, you can learn more about the life and career of the engineer and aviation pioneer. Cycle through the Peene Valley, which is bursting with untouched nature, to Stolpe. Visit the old monastery ruins, the Fährkrug and the Wartislaw church. You will spend the night in Anklam or Stolpe.
Today's stage of your cycle tour on Usedom and the Szczecin Lagoon takes you from the River Peene through the Lassaner Winkel, an area characterized by meadows and waterholes. A stopover in Lassan is worthwhile on the way. It is one of the smallest towns in Germany. Visit the museum in the former watermill and enjoy the maritime flair of the Peenestrom at the harbor. You will particularly notice the carved front doors in the town, which date back to the heyday of the woodworking trade. You have reached your destination for the day in Wolgast.
You follow the Peene River and reach the north-west of Usedom. In the former fishing village of Peenemünde, a center for rocket development and research was established at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, the area is home to the Historical-Technical Museum. It documents the area's historic past with models, films and much more. From Peenemünde, take the ferry to the fishing village of Freest. Before continuing on to Greifswald, fortify yourself with a fish sandwich at the harbor and visit the Freest local history museum, which will give you an insight into the production of fishing carpets.
